About the role (Job Summary)
As a Privacy Counsel, you will help ensure Chargebee can scale its business with trust by strengthening and operationalizing our global privacy program. You will work closely with cross-functional partners across Product, Security, IT, HR, and other teams to translate evolving privacy requirements into clear processes, tooling, and practical guidance. Serving as both an operational program driver and a trusted advisor, you will proactively identify and reduce privacy risk while enabling teams to move fast and build responsibly.
In doing so, you will help protect our customers, our people, and our brand—supporting Chargebee’s growth and long-term compliance goals.
What you’ll do (role and responsibilities)
- Lead and deliver privacy initiatives across the organization to strengthen program maturity and compliance outcomes.
- Own and maintain core privacy governance artifacts, including records of processing activities (RoPAs), data maps, and data inventories.
- Conduct and coordinate privacy assessments such as DPIAs, PIAs, and vendor privacy reviews, and drive remediation actions with stakeholders.
- Run the intake, triage,
and tracking of privacy-related requests, including DSARs and incident response actions, with clear SLAs and documentation.
- Embed privacy-by-design into product and project workflows by partnering with Product, Engineering, and Security teams.
- Support privacy-related contracting and customer/vendor engagements, including DPAs, SCCs, and TIA support (as applicable).
- Monitor regulatory developments (e.g., GDPR/UK GDPR, CPRA, India DPDP Act and other applicable laws) and translate requirements into actionable program updates.
- Build and maintain privacy program reporting (metrics/dashboards) such as DSAR turnaround times, DPIA throughput, vendor review cycle times, and training completion.
- Advise internal stakeholders on privacy implications of AI/ML and automated decision-making systems, and support governance as needed.
- Support privacy incident and breach response by partnering with Security and Legal on assessment, documentation, and communications (as applicable).
What you’ll bring (required skills and experience)
- An LLB/BL degree.
- 4+ years of experience in privacy, data protection, privacy operations, or compliance operations in a global organization supporting multi-region teams, customers, and regulatory requirements across geographies.
- Working knowledge of key global privacy laws (e.g., GDPR/UK GDPR, CPRA, India DPDP Act) and the ability to translate evolving requirements into action.
- Hands-on experience running privacy operations using compliance tools (e.g., OneTrust, TrustArc, Transcend) and building scalable workflows.
- Strong program management skills with attention to detail, able to manage multiple priorities in fast-moving, ambiguous environments.
- Excellent communication and cross-functional partnering skills, with a solid understanding of SaaS concepts (cloud, integrations, APIs).
- Ability to adopt and leverage AI tools to improve efficiency and quality of work, with sound judgment on what data and tasks are appropriate for AI use (and what are not) in line with company policies and privacy/security expectations.
- Familiarity with AI tools such as Claude, Gemini, NotebookLM, etc.
Nice to have (preferred)
- Privacy certification (e.g., CIPP/E, CIPP/US, CIPM, CIPT).
