Role Summary The Graphic Designer will own the visual craft of the home-learning games, illustrations, characters, interface screens, animated micro-assets, and print collateral, ensuring every artifact is pedagogically sound, culturally rooted in Maharashtra, and delightful for a 6 to 9 year old learner. The designer will collaborate daily with the content, curriculum, and technology teams to translate FLN learning outcomes into game-ready visuals.
Key Responsibilities
- Design original 2D characters, backgrounds, props, icons, and UI screens for FLN home-learning games (Marathi language and numeracy focus).
- Produce sprite sheets, layered PSD/AI files, and export-ready assets (SVG, PNG, WebP) sized for mobile-first delivery on low-bandwidth Android devices.
- Create short motion assets, GIFs, Lottie files, and straightforward frame animations, that reinforce learning feedback loops inside the games.
- Develop supporting collateral: parent instruction cards, printable worksheets, social creatives, explainer posters, event standees, and reports for CSR and government stakeholders.
- Maintain a consistent visual language and a reusable design system (colour, typography, iconography) across the NIPUN Maharashtra product family.
- Work closely with team to ensure every visual serves the learning objective, and iterate rapidly based on classroom and home-user testing.
- Manage version control of design files, organised handoffs to developers, and timely delivery against sprint calendars.
Must-Have Qualifications And Skills Education: Bachelor's degree or diploma in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Applied Arts, Animation, or a related discipline.
Exceptional self-taught designers with a strong portfolio will be considered. Experience: 2 to 5 years of professional design experience, ideally with exposure to education technology, children's content, gaming, or publishing.
Portfolio: Mandatory. Must include character design, UI screens, and at least one gamified or child-facing project.
Software Proficiency (mandatory)
- Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects.
- Figma for UI design and developer handoff.
- Familiarity with vector illustration workflows and export pipelines for game engines.
Language: Working knowledge of Marathi is strongly preferred; comfort with Devanagari typography is essential. Domain sensitivity: Understanding of, or eagerness to learn, child-appropriate visual design, accessibility, and low-bandwidth optimisation.
Good-to-Have Skills
- Working knowledge of animation tools such as Adobe Animate, Rive, Spine 2D, or LottieFiles.
- Basic familiarity with game engine asset requirements (Unity or Godot) and with HTML5 game frameworks (Phaser, Construct).
- Exposure to Canva, CorelDRAW, and Procreate for rapid iterations.
- Understanding of print production for stakeholder collateral.
- Prior work with government, CSR, or grant-funded programs.
Personal Attributes Meticulous attention to detail, strong sense of composition and colour, and an intuitive feel for child-centric design. Comfortable working in a mission-driven, fast-moving team, receptive to feedback, and able to deliver under tight timelines without compromising craft. Empathy for first-generation learners and their parents is indispensable (essential and non-negotiable).
