Company Description
Clikkin is a community platform built by a small team of designers and engineers. We're a product startup (not a service agency) building our own IP. Bootstrapped and in a pre-revenue stage.
Company Culture
We thrive on engineers who think independently, research deeply, and own their domain outright. We do not micro-manage. Everyone works fully remote on a flexible (but intense!) schedule with real autonomy. Approaches to problems are not handed down from the top. We arrive at the best path through internal debate and rationales backed by research. If you prefer being told exactly what to build and how, this will not suit you.
What You Can Expect
- A small team of curious experts who take pride in their craft. Nobody here is coasting and nobody is carried.
- Problems that are current to us. We are regularly building things none of us has built before, so the answer usually is not on Stack Overflow. You will read papers, documentation and other people's source code to find it. That is the work, not a detour from it.
- A learning curve with no obvious end. Depending on who you are this is the best or the worst thing about the job. If you research your way into unfamiliar territory for fun, you will like it here more than anywhere you have worked. If you want a settled stack and a known problem space, you won't fit here.
- Real ownership. Your domain is yours to design, defend and improve, and you will be the person who knows it best.
Role Description
You will own the Clikkin backend and the infrastructure it runs on. The API, the data model, the deployment pipeline,
and the judgement calls about how all three should work.
There are two languages here. Elixir/Phoenix is the primary. Python is used for specific specialized processes (automoderation, content ranking etc).
We need mastery of Python from day one. Elixir you will learn here, and quickly. What we are actually looking for is a real programmer with deep command of at least one language, because that transfers and syntax does not.
Tech Stack
- Backend: Elixir / Phoenix and Python
- Database: PostgreSQL
- Mobile: React Native / Expo
- Containers: Docker on AWS ECS
- Infrastructure: AWS (ECS, RDS, Terraform), GCP, Cloudflare
- Python runs our automoderation pipeline today, with content ranking and further model work next
- We run our own infrastructure. Nothing here is managed for us.
Qualifications
- Strong written and spoken English (This is mandatory and non-negotiable!)
- Strong programming fundamentals, with Python as your working language
- Real experience designing and modelling databases, not just querying them
- You have deployed a backend to a VPS yourself and understand what happens underneath
- Some DevOps behind you, and a genuine appetite to go deeper into it
- A track record of teaching yourself languages and frameworks nobody asked you to learn
- This is an early-career role. If you have six or more years behind you and a salary expectation to match, this will not be a fit.
