The role: The role suits someone with genuine depth in algorithms, mathematics, and programming who wants to build practical AI systems rather than assemble existing ones. You should be able to design experiments, evaluate model/algorithm performance, and make data-driven decisions about accuracy, latency, and computational cost. You will own problems end to end.

Key responsibilities

- Translate loosely defined product problems into well-posed mathematical and algorithmic formulations.
- Design, implement, and iterate on AI algorithms in Python, from prototype through to production hand-off.
- Track developments in modern AI, including LLMs, representation learning, retrieval, fine-tuning, inference optimization, and emerging AI techniques, and assess their applicability to Ascendr's products.
- Work with platform and product engineers to integrate algorithms into production systems.

Required skills and qualifications

- Strong foundation in algorithms and data structures,



with the ability to reason about correctness and computational complexity.
- Applied mathematics you can actually use: linear algebra, probability and statistics, and the basics of numerical optimization.
- Proficient in Python, with hands-on experience using libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, PyTorch, or similar tools.
- Able to read a technical paper and implement it from scratch.
- Solid software development fundamentals: version control, testing, code review, and code a colleague can maintain six months later.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated ability.

Good to have

- Experience taking AI/ML work into production: serving, quantization, distillation, latency and cost optimization.
- Strong competitive programming, algorithmic problem-solving, or other evidence of serious algorithmic ability.
- Hands-on work with LLM systems: fine-tuning, evaluation harnesses, retrieval pipelines, or agentic workflows.

What we're looking for

Someone who enjoys solving hard problems rather than reaching for the nearest existing tool. Strong mathematical and algorithmic fundamentals, solid Python, and real curiosity about how current AI techniques can be applied to practical engineering and business problems. We would rather hire someone who can tell us why an approach will not work than someone who has used more frameworks.
