Mechanical Design Engineer Roles & Responsibilities
Summary
Responsible for the complete mechanical design and engineering process, from concept development and 3D modelling to detailed drawings, assembly documentation, prototyping, and production. The role also involves working closely with the CNC machine shop and production team to ensure components are manufactured accurately, efficiently, and according to design specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Create 2D engineering drawings with accurate dimensions, tolerances, GD&T;, material specifications, and manufacturing requirements.
- Develop detailed 3D CAD models of components, assemblies, and complete products.
- Prepare assembly drawings, exploded views, BOMs, and assembly documentation for production and service teams.
- Design mechanical components, fixtures, jigs, tools, and product assemblies.
- Develop and maintain Bill of Materials (BOM), part numbers, drawing revisions, and engineering documentation.
- Work closely with the CNC machine shop to ensure components can be manufactured efficiently and accurately.
- Support CNC machine setup, tooling selection, machining processes, work-holding, and production planning.
- Review machined components and verify them against engineering drawings and specifications.
- Oversee prototype development, testing, and design validation.
- Work with the production team to resolve manufacturing and assembly issues.
- Identify design improvements to reduce manufacturing cost, material consumption, machining time, and assembly time.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and production-related problems and implement corrective actions.
- Coordinate with suppliers for machined parts, fabricated components, materials, and outsourced manufacturing.
- Assist in selecting appropriate materials, bearings, fasteners, motors, shafts, gears, and other mechanical components.
- Conduct design reviews and ensure products meet required quality, performance, safety, and reliability standards.
- Support current product development from concept prototype testing production continuous improvement.
- Implement Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
- Maintain proper engineering records, drawing revisions, and change-control documentation.
- Work with quality, procurement, production, and engineering teams to ensure smooth product development and manufacturing.
- Monitor production issues and provide technical support for CNC, machining, fabrication, and assembly operations.
- Continuously identify opportunities for process improvement, automation, and productivity enhancement.
