Key Role:
- The role is critical in establishing and running a robust quality control function to ensure that all incoming materials, in-process materials, finished goods, and packing materials meet defined quality standards. Given the hazardous nature of the key raw material, the role also demands robust discipline in laboratory safety, compliance, testing accuracy, and documentation. The QC Manager will be responsible not only for routine quality testing and release decisions, but also for setting up the laboratory systems, methods, controls, and team capabilities required for a reliable and audit-ready QC function.
Job Profile:
Laboratory Setup and Commissioning
- Establish and operationalize the QC laboratory for the new plant.
- Identify, plan, and install required laboratory equipment, instruments, glassware, chemicals, and utilities.
- Support qualification, calibration, and validation of laboratory instruments and testing systems.
- Develop laboratory layout, workflow, sample handling systems, and storage arrangements for safe and efficient operation.
- Ensure the laboratory is designed and run in accordance with safety norms relevant to hazardous chemical handling.
Laboratory Management
- Manage day-to-day laboratory operations to ensure timely and accurate testing.
- Maintain laboratory equipment in working condition through calibration, preventive maintenance, and vendor coordination.
- Monitor inventory of chemicals, reagents,
glassware, standards, consumables, and spare parts to prevent disruption.
- Ensure proper housekeeping, storage, labelling, and disposal practices in the laboratory.
- Control laboratory records, test reports, logbooks, and retention samples systematically.
Testing and Quality Decision-Making
- Conduct, review, and approve testing of Raw Materials (RM), Work-in-Progress (WiP), Finished Goods (FG), Packing Materials.
- Release or reject materials based on specifications and test results.
- Ensure timely availability of test results to production, stores, and dispatch functions.
- Monitor conformance to product specifications, internal standards, and customer requirements.
- Investigate out-of-specification (OOS), abnormal trends, and deviations, and recommend corrective actions.
Method Development, Standardization, and Documentation
- Prepare and maintain specifications, test methods, standard operating procedures, formats, and work instructions for all QC activities.
- Standardise test methods for raw materials, intermediates, finished products, and packing materials.
- Ensure proper documentation of sampling, testing, approvals, rejections, deviations, and retest requirements.
- Maintain certificate of analysis formats and related quality records.
- Support creation and upkeep of documentation required for certifications, audits, and customer requirements.
Quality Systems and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with company quality standards, statutory requirements, and applicable good laboratory practices.
- Support implementation and maintenance of quality management systems.
- Participate in internal audits, customer audits, and third-party inspections.
- Ensure laboratory readiness for audits through proper records, traceability, and system discipline.
- Support non-conformance reporting, CAPA closure, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Coordination with Plant Functions
- Work closely with production, stores, procurement, maintenance, and dispatch teams for smooth material flow and quality control.
- Coordinate sampling plans and test priorities in line with production schedules and dispatch timelines.
- Provide timely feedback to production on process deviations and product quality issues.
- Coordinate with procurement for quality issues related to incoming raw materials and vendor performance.
Safety and Risk Control
- Ensure strict adherence to safety practices in the laboratory, especially considering hazardous raw materials.
- Train staff on safe handling of chemicals, use of PPE, emergency response, spill control, and waste disposal.
- Ensure safe storage and handling of reagents, samples, and hazardous substances.
- Work closely with EHS and plant leadership to maintain a safe QC environment.
Team Leadership and Capability Building
- Build, guide, and supervise the QC team including chemists, analysts, and lab assistants.
- Allocate work, review performance, and ensure technical competence of team members.
- Train team members on test methods, equipment usage, documentation, and laboratory discipline.
- Foster a culture of accuracy, responsiveness, compliance, and ownership.
Continuous Improvement
- Improve laboratory efficiency, turnaround time, testing reliability, and reporting quality.
- Track quality trends and generate actionable insights for reduction in rejection, rework, and process variability.
- Recommend better testing practices, automation opportunities, and stronger analytical controls.
- Contribute to improvement of plant quality performance and customer confidence.
Desired Profile:
- M.Sc (Chemistry / Inorganic Chemistry) with 8 to 10 years experience in Quality Control preferably in the manufacturing of inorganic chemicals with Chemicals / Inorganic Chemicals / Speciality Chemicals / Process Manufacturing.
- Experience in setting up or stabilising QC systems / laboratories in a new or expanding plant will be strongly preferred.
- Exposure to handling hazardous chemicals and related testing/safety disciplines is desirable.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory systems, chemical testing, and quality control processes.
- Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment, calibration, and consumable planning.
- Good understanding of specifications, sampling, test methods, COA preparation, and rejection/release protocols.
- Strong documentation and audit readiness mind-set.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with production and other plant departments.
- High level of discipline, analytical thinking, and attention to detail.
- Leadership capability to build and manage a QC team in a growing organisation.
- Familiarity with ERP/LIMS/reporting systems will be an advantage.
