An Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurse provides round-the-clock, highly specialized care to patients with life-threatening illnesses or injuries. Core duties involve continuous patient monitoring, managing complex life-support equipment, administering exact medications, and rapidly responding to sudden medical emergencies. - Perform head-to-toe physical assessments every hour.
- Monitor vital signs via cardiac monitors, telemetry, and arterial lines.
- Track fluid balance by measuring precise intake and output.
- Review critical lab values like arterial blood gases (ABGs) and electrolytes. [1, 2, 3]
Clinical Care and Equipment Operation
- Manage mechanical ventilators and artificial airways.
- Titrate complex intravenous (IV) drips and critical medications.
- Care for invasive lines,
including central venous catheters and chest tubes.
- Prevent secondary complications like pressure ulcers and infections. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Communication and Collaboration
- Coordinate daily care plans with multidisciplinary medical teams.
- Give detailed shift handoffs using structured formats like SBAR.
- Update families on patient status and explain complex medical equipment.
- Provide emotional support during critical or end-of-life decisions
