• Architecture Management: Maintain the integrity of the overall architecture, including front-end, back-end, middleware, and performance aspects. Ensure the speed and accuracy of the system, maintaining high uptime, and managing key performance indicators (KPIs) such as customer drop rates.
• Technology Strategy: Define and implement the company’s technology strategy, ensuring it aligns with business goals and incorporates new, relevant technologies.
• Innovation: Lead initiatives that introduce innovative technologies and practices, maintaining a competitive edge in the fintech market.
2. Platform and Tool Decisions
• Platform Selection: Make informed decisions on platforms and tools to be used, ensuring they meet the company’s needs for scalability, security, and performance.
• Collaboration with PEs: Work with other Principal Engineers (PEs) to build consensus and unify architectural and platform decisions across the organization.
3. Team Leadership and Mentorship
• Leading TAs and SDMs: Provide strategic direction and mentorship to Technical Architects (TAs) and Software Development Managers (SDMs), ensuring they have the support needed to excel.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with other departments to ensure the engineering team’s efforts are aligned with the company’s broader strategies.
• Talent Development: Identify skill gaps and drive training and development programs to continuously elevate the team’s capabilities.
4. People Management
• Hiring Top Talent: Lead the hiring process to bring in top-tier talent who can raise the bar for the team. Focus on selecting candidates with the potential to exceed existing standards and drive innovation.
• Bar Raiser: Act as a bar raiser during the recruitment process, ensuring that new hires not only meet but exceed the company’s expectations in terms of skills, culture fit, and potential for growth.
• Performance Management: Oversee performance evaluations, providing constructive feedback and setting clear goals to ensure continuous improvement and high performance across the team.
5. Strategic Planning and Execution
• Project Oversight:
Ensure key projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. Proactively manage risks and issues throughout the development lifecycle.
• Continuous Improvement: Implement steps to enhance system quality through CI/CD, DevOps, and QA practices. Manage production issues effectively, ensuring timely root cause analysis (RCA) and resolution.
• Process Improvement: Drive the adoption of Agile practices and continuous improvement in development processes to enhance efficiency and collaboration.|6. Compatibility and Version Management
• Backward Compatibility: Ensure backward compatibility of systems, minimizing disruptions when implementing updates or new features.
• Version Control: Manage source code versioning efficiently, ensuring that changes are tracked and managed effectively.
7. Quality and Compliance
• Code Quality and Standards: Establish tollgates for code checks, ensuring code quality and security throughout the development process. Regularly review HLDs and LLDs to maintain high standards.
• Unit Testing Coverage: Ensure that unit testing coverage exceeds 80%, promoting high code reliability and minimizing the risk of defects in production. Verify that unit testing is completed before code integration.
• Compliance and Security: Ensure that all software meets regulatory requirements and adheres to the highest security standards, critical in a fintech environment.
8. Budget and Resource Management
• Resource Allocation: Effectively manage the allocation of resources (time, personnel, tools) across projects to achieve objectives without overextending the team.
• Budget Management: Work with finance and executive teams to develop and manage the engineering budget, balancing cost considerations with the need for quality and innovation.
9. Vision and Culture
• Technology Vision: Articulate and promote a long-term vision for technology within the company, ensuring alignment with business strategy and market trends.
• Culture Building: Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning within the engineering team, ensuring high motivation and engagement.
Key Decisions / Dimensions
• Architectural Choices: Decide on the overall architecture, including microservices design,
database optimization, and integration of new technologies.
• Tool and Platform Selection: Choose the development frameworks, CI/CD tools, and cloud platforms that best meet the application’s requirements.
• Hiring and Team Structure: Make decisions regarding team composition, hiring strategies, and talent development to build a high-performing engineering team.
• Quality Assurance Processes: Determine the tools and processes for code quality, unit testing, and security to ensure compliance with industry standards.
Major Challenges
