To lead and manage the Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine services, ensuring secure, timely, and quality-assured blood and blood component availability. The role will be responsible for clinical governance, regulatory compliance, quality management, team leadership, and efficient functioning of the department.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the overall functioning and clinical operations of the Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine department.
- Ensure round-the-clock availability of safe blood and blood components as per hospital requirements.
- Supervise blood collection, component separation, storage, testing, compatibility testing, issue, and transfusion practices.
- Ensure compliance with NBTC, NACO, CDSCO, State Blood Transfusion Council, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
- Ensure adherence to SOPs, quality standards, documentation, and statutory requirements.
- Oversee donor screening, blood collection, adverse donor reactions, and donor counselling.
- Supervise immunohematology, transfusion testing, antibody screening, cross-matching, and investigation of transfusion reactions.
- Establish and monitor protocols for massive transfusion, emergency blood release, rare blood groups, and special transfusion requirements.
- Ensure proper maintenance of blood/component inventory, cold-chain management, storage conditions, and wastage control.
- Monitor and investigate transfusion reactions and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Drive quality improvement, audits, internal quality control, proficiency testing, and accreditation requirements.
- Coordinate with clinical departments, OT, ICU, Emergency, Obstetrics, Oncology, Transplant,
and other high-demand specialties.
- Lead and mentor doctors, technical staff, nurses, counsellors, and other Blood Bank personnel.
- Prepare manpower plans, duty rosters, training programs, and competency assessments.
- Monitor departmental KPIs including blood/component availability, turnaround time, wastage, rejection rates, transfusion reactions, and inventory levels.
- Participate in hospital committees related to transfusion safety, infection control, quality, and patient safety.
- Ensure preparedness for emergencies, disasters, mass casualties, and high-volume transfusion requirements.
- Liaise with external blood banks and authorities whenever required for blood/component support.
- Promote appropriate and rational use of blood and blood components across the hospital.
Qualification
- MD/DNB in Transfusion Medicine preferred.
- Candidates with relevant postgraduate qualification and appropriate experience in Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine may also be considered, subject to applicable regulatory requirements.
Experience
- 8–12+ years of relevant experience, preferably in a tertiary-care/multispecialty hospital.
- Experience in leading a high-volume hospital Blood Bank and managing NABH/NABL or equivalent quality and regulatory requirements will be preferred.
