Reporting To: Veterinary Technician / Medical Director / Nominated Veterinary Surgeon

Job Summary The Veterinary Assistant provides essential support to the veterinary team in delivering safe, compassionate, and efficient care to animal patients, particularly those undergoing cancer diagnosis and treatment. The role involves assisting with patient handling, clinical preparation, hygiene, supportive care, inpatient monitoring, and assisting veterinary technicians and doctors during consultations and procedures.

The Veterinary Assistant plays an key role in maintaining a safe, hygienic, organized, and compassionate environment for patients, pet parents, and the clinical team.

Key Responsibilities

1. Patient Handling & Support

1.1 Assist in safely handling, lifting, and restraining pets, including dogs, cats, and other companion animals, during consultations, diagnostics, and treatments.

1.2 Ensure the patient's physical comfort before, during, and after examinations, procedures, and treatments.

1.3 Support the veterinary team in calming anxious, painful, or stressed patients using appropriate fear-free handling techniques.

1.4 Observe patients for changes in behavior, appetite, activity, comfort, or general condition and promptly report concerns to the veterinarian or technician.

2. Clinical Room Setup & Hygiene

2.1 Prepare and maintain consultation rooms, treatment areas, and OPD areas before and after each case.

2.2 Clean, disinfect, and restock clinical spaces, equipment, and treatment areas as per clinic protocols.

2.3 Assist with proper disposal of clinical and biomedical waste while following infection-control and safety protocols.

2.4 Maintain a clean and organized environment, particularly in areas where immunocompromised or oncology patients are being treated.

3. Support in OPD, Diagnostics & Procedures

3.1 Assist veterinary technicians and veterinarians in organizing instruments, medical supplies, patient records, and medications under supervision.

3.2 Provide basic clinical assistance as instructed, including oral medication administration, wound cleaning, applying ointments, and other supportive care.

3.3 Assist the veterinary team during diagnostic procedures, treatments, and minor procedures as directed.





3.4 Help prepare patients and treatment areas before chemotherapy, procedures, or other oncology-related treatments under the direct supervision of the veterinary team.

3.5 Follow all safety instructions and protocols while assisting with oncology treatments and handling materials associated with cancer therapy.

4. Oncology Patient & Post-Treatment Care

4.1 Assist with monitoring patients before, during, and after cancer treatments as instructed by the veterinary team.

4.2 Monitor and report changes such as vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, reduced appetite, unusual behavior, discomfort, or other abnormalities to the veterinarian or technician.

4.3 Assist with feeding, hydration, bedding, cleanliness, and general comfort of hospitalized oncology patients.

4.4 Support post-operative and post-treatment recovery by monitoring patients and immediately communicating any concerns to senior clinical staff.

4.5 Ensure patients remain warm, dry, comfortable, and clean throughout their stay.

5. Inpatient Care & Cage Management

5.1 Assist with cage management, including cleaning, feeding, changing bedding, and maintaining patient comfort.

5.2 Follow individual patient care instructions provided by veterinarians and technicians.

5.3 Maintain accurate observation and communicate any changes in the patient's condition to the concerned team member.

6. Pet Parent & Team Support

6.1 Work closely with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, reception teams, and other support staff to ensure smooth patient flow.

6.2 Maintain a calm, compassionate, and professional approach while interacting with pet parents, particularly when handling patients undergoing cancer treatment.

6.3 Assist the clinical team in maintaining an organized and efficient workflow during busy OPD and treatment hours.

6.4 Maintain professional behavior, punctuality, teamwork, and a positive attitude toward patients, pet parents, and colleagues.

7. Training, Safety & Compliance





7.1 Participate in training sessions, skill-development programs, and safety drills as required.

7.2 Follow all clinic SOPs, hygiene standards, infection-control procedures, and workplace safety guidelines.

7.3 Maintain confidentiality of patient and client information.

7.4 Demonstrate willingness to learn oncology-related patient care and clinical support procedures under appropriate supervision.

Qualifications and Skills

- Minimum qualification: 12th Grade (HSC) or equivalent; LSS or LMDP preferred.
- Certification or hands-on experience in pet care, animal handling, or a veterinary clinical setup is preferred.
- Previous experience in a veterinary clinic, hospital, diagnostic center, or animal-care environment will be an advantage.
- Passion for animals and willingness to learn clinical and oncology-related skills.
- Basic understanding of animal body language and behavior.
- Ability to safely handle and restrain pets.
- Physically fit to lift or hold pets and assist with cleaning, patient care, and clinical setup.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and maintain high standards of hygiene and safety.
- Courteous, patient, compassionate, and empathetic when dealing with pet parents and patients.
- Good observation skills and ability to promptly report changes in patient condition.
- Willingness to work in shifts, weekends, and during emergencies.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary veterinary team.
