Job Title: Turner / Lathe Operator Department: Plant Maintenance / Mechanical Engineering Reports To: Maintenance Engineer / Mechanical In-charge Location: Plant Site Employment Type: Full-Time Job Purpose The Turner is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining conventional lathe machines and turning equipment to fabricate, modify, and repair mechanical components, spare parts, and tooling required for continuous plant operations. The role plays a vital part in minimizing plant downtime by delivering high-precision machining during routine maintenance and emergency breakdowns.

Key Responsibilities & Duties 1. Machining & Fabrication Set up and operate conventional lathes (and basic turning centers) to perform operations such as turning, facing, threading, boring, grooving, knurling, and parting off. Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, sketches, and job orders to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces.

Machine shafts, bushes, sleeves, flanges, pump impellers, valve spindles, and coupling components according to required engineering standards. 2.

Plant

Maintenance & Breakdown Support Rework and repair worn-out plant spares and machinery components to restore them to operational specifications. Coordinate with the mechanical maintenance team during plant shutdowns and emergency breakdowns for rapid component fabrication. Select appropriate cutting tools, tool holders, fixtures, and speeds/feeds based on the material (e.g., Mild Steel, Stainless Steel, Brass, Bronze, Cast Iron, High-Tensile Alloys, PTFE/Nylon). 3.

Quality

Control & Measurement Inspect finished components using precision measuring instruments such as vernier calipers, micrometers (inside/outside), dial bore gauges, thread gauges, and depth gauges.



Maintain tight dimensional tolerances (e.g., within pm 0.02text{ mm} or as specified in drawings) and appropriate surface finish requirements. Maintain logs and documentation of jobs completed, material consumed, and rework carried out. 4.

Machine

Care & Shop Floor Safety Perform daily routine cleaning, lubrication, and basic preventive maintenance on workshop machines and tools. Strictly adhere to factory safety guidelines, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and 5S workplace housekeeping practices. Use mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times and report any machine faults, tool wear, or safety hazards immediately.

Required Qualifications &

Experience Education: ITI / NCVT certificate in Turner or Machinist trade (Diploma in Mechanical Engineering is an added advantage).

Experience: 2 to 5 years of practical experience as a Turner in a continuous process plant (e.g., Steel, Paper, Chemical, Packaging, Manufacturing, Heavy Engineering).

Technical Skills: Proficient in operating conventional/manual lathe machines. Expert in using precision measuring tools (Vernier, Micrometer, Gauges). Hands-on experience with metric and imperial screw-thread cutting.

Solid understanding of engineering drawings and geometrical tolerances. Key Competencies & Personal Attributes Robust attention to detail and dimensional accuracy. Ability to work effectively under pressure during breakdown situations.

Willingness to work in shifts and provide on-call breakdown support when required. Good team player with clear communication skills.

Pay: ₹20,000.00 - ₹35,000.00 per month
