Franklin & Marshall College is recruiting for a full-time Laboratory and Instrumentation Manager.

- Location: F&M; Campus - Lancaster, PA
- Classification: Full time, Exempt
- Schedule: 40 hours, Monday - Friday.
- Reports to: Department Chair, Chemistry

- Approved Salary Range: Approved salary up to $57,000.00
The Laboratory and Instrumentation Manager is responsible for overseeing laboratory spaces and their use in support of teaching and research. This includes instrumentation and equipment, ordering, inventory, and storage of lab chemicals and supplies. This position oversees use, maintenance, and repair of lab equipment, supports regulatory compliance and safety, and ensures teaching lab preparation, overall lab cleanliness, and organization. Major instrumentation in the department currently includes NMR, IR, circular dichroism, absorption and fluorescence spectrometers; TOF-MS, LC-MS, and GC-MS systems; HPLC and ion chromatographs; a benchtop transmission electron microscope; potentiostats; and pH meters.
Essential Functions
- Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instrumentation .
- Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repairs on laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
- Coordinate with external service providers for instrumentation and equipment repairs or certifications.
- Maintain logs of maintenance and service activities.
- Organize training materials and assist with training on major equipment.
- Prepare laboratory spaces, reagents, and equipment necessary for experiments in General and Organic Chemistry and upper level courses.
- Supervise and assist student laboratory assistants to restock lab benches and prep areas, maintain general cleanliness and organization of the lab and stockroom areas.
- Oversee preparation and safe disposal (in consultation with external waste handlers) of necessary chemical reagents.
- Stockroom & inventory management
- Order, receive, label, and store chemical reagents and lab supplies in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Track chemical and supply inventory levels; order materials as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of chemical usage and stock levels.
- Track budget for purchasing materials for the stockroom.
- Promote lab safety protocols in accordance with institutional guidelines. Liaise with the appropriate college personnel and external waste handlers to help ensure safety guidelines are followed.
- All other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in chemistry or a related field.
- At least 3 years of relevant experience with laboratory procedures and maintenance.
- Familiarity with and knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in modern laboratories and the ability to learn about and apply knowledge to troubleshooting problems, maintaining, and repairing new or different instrumentation and equipment.
- Effective organizational skills, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize workload.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate and supervise an inclusive, student-centric environment.
- Ability to work safely with chemical hazards, cryogenic liquids, and compressed gases and a general familiarity with best practices for working safely in a laboratory environment.
- General expertise in computers and scientific software.
- Proficiency in Google Suite Products (Docs, Gmail, Sheets, Slides, Drive)
- Valid driver's license.
- Successful interview.
- Successful completion of background checks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in chemistry or a related field.
- Prior professional experience working in a Higher Education setting.
