Director, Software Engineer

About the Role

We are building a new AI-native, product-led engineering organization at Prudential Japan and are looking for Engineering Directors who want to help shape the future of both technology and the insurance business.

This role is responsible for building and leading high-performing engineering teams that deliver modern digital products, platforms, and business capabilities aligned to Prudential Japan’s Technology Transformation initiative.

Engineering

Directors will lead teams of Full-Stack Engineers, Front-End Engineers, AI Engineers, and other engineering specialists to modernize legacy systems, redesign business workflows, and deliver AI-enabled capabilities that improve customer experience, operational efficiency, risk reduction, and business growth.

This is not a traditional delivery management role. We are looking for hands-on technology leaders who combine engineering excellence, product thinking, AI adoption, and people leadership to help transform Prudential into a more product-driven, data-driven, and insurtech-style organization.

Key Responsibilities

Japan Technology Transformation & Business Growth

- Lead engineering teams that help accelerate Prudential Japan's Technology Transformation initiative
- Partner with business, product, design, and technology leaders to modernize platforms, simplify legacy complexity, and improve how the business operates
- Drive adoption of AI-enabled products and workflows that improve customer experiences, employee productivity, distribution effectiveness, and operational efficiency
- Contribute directly to business growth by delivering technology capabilities that enable new products, improve customer engagement, accelerate distribution, and reduce operational friction
- Help establish a modern product engineering culture that moves Prudential toward a more insurtech-style operating model

Product & Engineering Delivery

- Lead one or more product-aligned engineering teams delivering business-critical capabilities, platforms, and customer journeys
- Provide technical leadership across the product domain, helping teams make sound architecture, design, and engineering decisions.
- Partner with Product Management, Design, Architecture, and business stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable technology solutions
- Drive delivery of high-quality products and services using contemporary engineering practices
- Ensure teams focus on business outcomes, customer value, and operational excellence rather than project milestones alone
- Support the transition from siloed applications to modern product and workflow-based platforms
- Foster adoption of reusable services, APIs, shared capabilities, and platform thinking across engineering teams

AI-First Engineering

- Build teams that leverage AI throughout the software development lifecycle, including design, coding, testing, documentation, and operations
- Help engineers identify opportunities to embed AI into products, customer journeys,



and business workflows
- Drive practical adoption of AI technologies that improve delivery speed, product quality, productivity, and business outcomes
- Foster an AI-native mindset where teams challenge existing processes and rethink how technology and work get done
- Encourage experimentation and continuous learning around AI technologies while maintaining appropriate controls and governance

People Leadership & Talent Development

- Recruit, develop, and lead high-performing teams of Full-Stack Engineers, Front-End Engineers, AI Engineers, and other engineering specialists
- Create an environment where engineers can grow their technical expertise, product mindset, and business understanding
- Develop future technical leaders and engineering managers

Engineering Excellence

- Establish and reinforce contemporary software engineering practices
- Drive adoption of reusable components, APIs, shared platforms, and engineering standards
- Promote secure-by-design and compliance-by-design development practices
- Ensure solutions are scalable, resilient, maintainable, and supportable in production
- Balance speed, quality, risk, and long-term sustainability

Delivery & Vendor Leadership

- Lead hybrid engineering teams consisting of internal engineers and strategic vendor partners
- Ensure vendors operate as integrated members of the product team and deliver against shared outcomes
- Improve engineering productivity, quality, and delivery predictability
- Drive continuous improvement in delivery processes, vendor effectiveness, and engineering practices

Stakeholder Collaboration

- Build strong partnerships across Product Engineering, Product Management, Design, Architecture, Security, Data & AI, and Platform Engineering teams
- Communicate effectively with business and technology stakeholders across Japan and global teams
- Manage competing priorities and drive informed trade-off decisions
- Help bridge business strategy and technology execution

Qualifications and Experience

Experience

- Experience leading software engineering teams in an enterprise technology environment
- Proven track record delivering modern digital products, platforms, or customer-facing solutions
- Experience working within Agile product delivery models
- Experience managing distributed teams and collaborating across global organizations
- Experience working with third-party vendors and hybrid delivery models preferred
- Experience in financial services, insurance, or regulated industries preferred but not required

Technical Background

- Strong software engineering foundation with experience in one or more modern technology stacks
- Experience with cloud-native technologies, APIs, microservices, and modern application architectures
- Experience making architecture, platform, and technical design decisions for complex enterprise systems
- Familiarity with DevOps, CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and software engineering best practices
- Understanding of AI-assisted software development and emerging AI technologies
- Experience building scalable, secure, and resilient enterprise systems
- Ability to balance immediate business needs with long-term technology strategy and sustainability.
