Position Overview

The Steel Engineer - Sourcing & Commercial Support plays a key role in bridging technical expertise with supply chain, procurement, and commercial operations. This role ensures that steel products meet required specifications, supports global sourcing activities, evaluates suppliers, optimizes cost, and assists commercial teams in executing trading strategies efficiently. The ideal candidate combines robust engineering knowledge with business acumen and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

1. Technical Evaluation & Product Expertise Provide technical guidance on steel grades, mechanical properties, standards, and manufacturing processes.

Review and validate mill certificates, specifications, and quality documentation.

Support customer inquiries by translating technical requirements into clear sourcing criteria.

Assist in resolving technical deviations or quality concerns with mills and suppliers.

2. Sourcing & Supplier Management Identify, evaluate, and develop new steel suppliers, mills, and processing partners.

Conduct supplier capability assessments, including process audits and capacity evaluations.

Collaborate with suppliers on pricing, lead times, production schedules, and product availability.

Maintain supplier performance metrics (quality, delivery, cost, compliance).

3. Commercial Support & Trading Operations Support sales and trading teams with technical insights to help win bids or negotiate contracts.

Analyze market trends, cost drivers, and production cycles affecting pricing.

Prepare technical-commercial proposals and support RFQ/RFP responses.

Assist in negotiations by evaluating technical risks, cost-saving opportunities, and value engineering options.

4. Quality Assurance & Compliance Monitor steel quality from production to delivery, ensuring adherence to industry standards (e.g., ASTM, EN, JIS).

Work with QA teams to investigate non-conformities and implement corrective actions.





Ensure all sourced products meet regulatory, safety, and environmental requirements.

5. Supply Chain & Logistics Coordination Support logistics teams by offering technical insights regarding loadability, handling, and packaging requirements.

Review production timelines and coordinate with supply chain teams to maintain on-time delivery.

Optimize supply chain performance by advising on alternative materials, suppliers, and processing routes.

6. Documentation & Reporting Maintain accurate technical and commercial records for all sourced products.

Create reports on supplier performance, sourcing cost analysis, and product compliance.

Develop internal knowledge resources on steel grades, mills, and market trends.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Education

Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.

Experience

2-7 years of experience in steel manufacturing, steel sourcing, trading, procurement, or technical sales.

Experience with mills, service centers, global suppliers, or industrial supply chains preferred.

Technical Skills

Strong understanding of steel grades (carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, long/flat products).

Familiarity with international standards (ASTM, EN, ISO, DIN, JIS, API).

Ability to read engineering drawings and material specifications.

Proficiency in analyzing mill test certificates and quality documents.

Commercial & Soft Skills

Strong negotiation and supplier management capabilities.

Ability to collaborate across sales, procurement, logistics, and quality teams.
