A role for someone who refuses to specialise yet.

There is a kind of person who is good at too many things to fit a job title. They can hold an architecture argument in the morning, rebuild a budget model over lunch, and spend the evening arguing about why a particular game's progression loop works. In most companies this person is a problem — nobody knows which department they belong to. In a bootstrapped company building something new, they are the most valuable person in the room.

Blowtrumpet is building a full programmatic advertising stack — a DSP, an SSP, an exchange, and the platform beneath them. That means a hard engineering problem, an unformed market position, a product surface nobody has designed properly, and a company that has to be built at the same time as the software. All four need someone thinking about them.

The thesis you have to share

You cannot design for mediocrity and arrive at excellence.

Ad-tech interfaces are, almost without exception, hostile. Dense tables, buried controls, no sense of momentum,



nothing that rewards the person using them. The industry decided long ago that because the users are professionals, the experience does not have to be valuable.
We think that is a failure of ambition. The best software people use every day is built the way games are built: with a clear sense of what the player is trying to do, feedback that makes progress visible, systems that reveal depth gradually, and a reason to come back. Not manipulation — craft. A trader opening a campaign dashboard should feel the same clarity a good game gives you in its first ten minutes: I understand this, I am getting better at it, and there is more here than I have seen.
