About the Job
We are looking for an experienced Shift Engineer – Power Plant to ensure smooth, reliable, and efficient operation of the Power Plant during shifts. The role will be responsible for operating and monitoring the boiler, turbine, and CHP systems as per predefined SOPs and standard operating conditions, while ensuring safe operations, reliable power generation, and compliance with applicable quality, safety, and environmental standards.
The incumbent will lead shift operations, provide direction to the operating team, monitor key plant parameters, drive operational excellence, and support maintenance, commissioning, energy conservation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Ensure smooth, reliable, and efficient operation of the Power Plant during the assigned shift.
Operate the plant comprising boiler, turbine, and CHP systems as per predefined SOPs and standard operating conditions.
Monitor plant parameters and performance during normal operations, emergencies, and shutdowns to ensure safe and reliable plant operation.
Provide directions to the shift team to ensure operational strategies are executed in alignment with organizational objectives.
Drive operational strategies focused on reliability, availability, and efficiency.
Implement long-term asset management plans covering predictive maintenance, energy optimization, and lifecycle improvement.
Align area performance with organizational goals related to sustainability, emission norms, and production demand.
Lead digitization, process engineering, and data-driven decision-making initiatives.
Plan annual overhauls, shutdowns, and upgradation schedules in coordination with plant leadership.
Drive cost optimization through yield improvements, energy conservation, productivity improvement, downtime reduction, loss minimization, and effective resource utilization.
Control operating expenditure by optimizing fuel usage, bed material consumption, chemical usage, and auxiliary power.
Proactively monitor plant conditions to prevent forced outages and ensure robust maintenance practices.
Validate major spares planning and procurement to ensure cost efficiency without compromising reliability.
Track and analyze key performance indicators including heat rate, steam rate, specific oil consumption, turbine efficiency, boiler efficiency, and maintenance cost.
Support budget creation and ensure adherence to annual O&M; budgets.
Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to achieve operational excellence.
Ensure uninterrupted supply of power and steam to internal and external process customers.
Maintain compliance with regulatory authorities including GPPCB and IBR.
Coordinate with external experts, OEM engineers, and service providers.
Represent the plant during audits, inspections, and customer visits with accuracy and professionalism.
Lead and supervise shift engineers, field operators, technicians, and contract workforce.
Key Individual Accountabilities
1.
Power Plant Operations & Maintenance
Be responsible for the safe and reliable operation of Re-heat CFBC Boiler, P.F. Boiler, Steam Re-heat Turbines (Double Cylinder), Cooling Tower, Air Compressors, Ash Handling and Coal Handling Plant, and other utilities including RO & DM Plant. Manage operations under normal functioning, emergency conditions, and plant shutdowns.
Monitor plant parameters and performance during the shift to ensure power generation as per target.
Ensure plant operations remain within specified technical parameters.
Monitor plant performance to ensure efficient utilization of resources and achievement of the desired PLF.
Coordinate with Electrical, C&I;, maintenance, and process teams for routing maintenance and resolution of operational issues during the shift.
1. Reporting & Operational Control
Maintain and prepare Daily Generation Reports, Maintenance Reports, Monthly Reports, and Critical Incident Reports. Ensure accurate recording and communication of shift performance and operational issues.
Ensure structured shift handovers, workforce allocation, and daily review meetings.
1. Quality, Environment, Health & Safety
Coordinate with Maintenance/HSE for implementation of safety initiatives at the plant. Ensure implementation and adherence to all safety, quality, and environmental requirements.
Ensure compliance with company initiatives such as ISO and TPM for equipment maintenance and safety.
Promote safe operating practices and maintain strong safety discipline across the shift.
1. Efficiency & Continuous Improvement
Drive efficiency improvement initiatives across plant operations. Guide and monitor continual improvement in the operational parameters of the plant.
Identify opportunities for energy conservation, productivity improvement, and downtime reduction.
Promote data-driven operational decision-making and resource optimization.
1. Project & Commissioning Support
Actively participate in erection, commissioning, and pre-commissioning of Boiler, Turbine, and BOP systems. Ensure all equipment is commissioned as per OEM guidelines and procedures.
Prepare commissioning procedures, pre-commissioning schedules, and maintain commissioning records.
Coordinate with OEMs, consultants, and project teams during commissioning activities.
1. Team Capability & Development
Foster a culture of discipline, teamwork, accountability, and continuous learning. Conduct capability-building activities including SOP training, safety drills, control room discipline, and turbine/boiler fundamentals.
Guide shift engineers, field operators, technicians,
and contract workforce.
Ensure effective workforce allocation and structured shift handovers.

Technical & Behavioral Skills & Knowledge:
B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering.
10–12 years of experience in thermal power plant operations, preferably as Shift In-Charge / Engineer in a power plant with a capacity of more than 90 MW.
Experience in coal-based power plants and reheat power plants will be preferred.
Strong experience in handling Re-heat CFBC/PF Boilers, re-heat steam turbines above 90 MW, CHP, AHP, and Air & Fuel Handling Systems.
Should have thorough knowledge of thermal plant operations.
Candidates should have experience in shift operations and managing shifts.
Candidates with a Boiler Operation Engineer (BOE) Certificate are preferred.
Knowledge of pre-commissioning and commissioning of boilers, turbines, and auxiliaries.
Knowledge of BBS, ISO, and OHSAS processes.
Operational knowledge of computers, including SAP R/3, is preferred.
Strong understanding of plant safety, environmental compliance, and statutory requirements.
Robust analytical, problem-solving, communication, and team leadership skills.
Ability to make effective decisions during normal and emergency plant operating conditions.
