- A Field Service Engineer (FSE) in ophthalmology is responsible for the on-site installation, precision optical alignment, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and clinical user training for specialized eye care and surgical devices.

- Core Responsibilities
- Installation &
- Commissioning

- Unbox, assemble, and set up ophthalmic equipment in clinics, hospitals, and operating theatres.

- Conduct site readiness audits (power stability, room dimensions, darkroom requirements, and vibration isolation).

- Configure embedded software, integrate devices with hospital PACS/EMR networks, and ensure DICOM compliance.

- Optical Alignment &

- Calibration

- Perform sub-millimeter optical alignment on diagnostic lasers (OCT, Nd:YAG, 532nm Green Photocoagulators) and slit lamp delivery attachments.

- Calibrate fixation targets, beam splitters, motorized chin-rests, and sensor sensitivity using specialized calibration jigs, artificial eyes, and power meters.

- Balance and calibrate surgical microscopes (focal length, zoom/magnification optics, foot pedals, and illumination optics).

- Preventive Maintenance (PPM) &

- Quality Assurance

- Execute scheduled PPM protocols per manufacturer guidelines (cleaning delicate optical glass,



prism inspection, lubrication of mechanical rails, lens cleaning).

- Test laser energy output, beam profile, and safety interlocks (aiming beam alignment, shutter controls).

- Replace consumable parts (xenon/halogen/LED bulbs, optical filters, fiber-optic cables).

- Breakdown Troubleshooting &

- Repairs

- Diagnose electro-mechanical, optical, and board-level (PCB) faults in office.

- Troubleshoot imaging artifacts, camera sensor noise, and software freezing in fundus cameras and OCT systems.

- Minimize equipment downtime to avoid surgery cancellations or clinical delays.

- Clinical Application &

- User Training

- Train ophthalmologists, optometrists, and OT technicians on correct operating protocols, basic cleaning, and safety procedures.

- Educate staff on laser safety standards and protective eyewear requirements.

- Documentation &

- Commercial Support

- Generate Service Reports, Field Failure Reports, and Customer Sign-offs.

- Promote and renew Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMC) and Comprehensive Maintenance Contracts (CMC).

- Manage field spare-parts inventory and trunk stock.
