Purpose of the Role The Actuarial Developer will be responsible for designing, developing and validating actuarial calculation systems within a modern technology environment. The role requires a strong combination of actuarial knowledge and software engineering capability, particularly within the life insurance and annuity domain.
You will work closely with actuarial, product and engineering teams to translate actuarial product specifications into scalable and robust technical solutions using C#, AWS and T-SQL. The role involves implementing complex actuarial calculations and ensuring they are accurately embedded within enterprise insurance systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain actuarial calculation engines and services using C# and .NET frameworks.
- Translate actuarial specifications and product rules into well-structured technical designs and system implementations.
- Implement calculations for life insurance and annuity products for US market, ensuring accuracy and alignment with actuarial models.
- Develop and optimise T-SQL queries, stored procedures and database structures to support actuarial calculations and data processing.
- Build and deploy solutions within AWS cloud environments, leveraging cloud-native services where appropriate.
- Perform rigorous testing and validation of actuarial calculations to ensure alignment with business and product requirements.
- Support integration of actuarial models with policy administration systems and insurance platforms.
- Work closely with product managers, developers and analysts to deliver end-to-end solutions.
- Contribute to system enhancements, product launches and change initiatives within the insurance platform.
- Support delivery activities including system testing, UAT support and post-deployment enhancements.
Required Qualifications and Skills
Technical Skills
- Strong programming experience in C# / .NET for system and application development.
- Experience working with AWS cloud platforms (e.g., EC2, Lambda, S3, RDS or similar services).
- Strong working knowledge of T-SQL / SQL Server for database development and data processing.
- Experience implementing calculation logic within enterprise systems or financial platforms.
- Ability to translate actuarial specifications into structured software implementations.
Actuarial and Domain Knowledge (Mandatory)
- Strong understanding of Life Contingencies and actuarial mathematics.
- Good understanding of life insurance and annuity product features, including product structures, advantages, policy mechanics and cashflow behaviour.
- Experience implementing life insurance or annuity product calculations within a system or modelling environment.
- Ability to interpret actuarial specifications and translate them into system logic.
Educational Background
- Degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or a related quantitative discipline.
- Strong quantitative background (A-level Mathematics or equivalent).
- Progress toward actuarial qualification (e.g., IFoA) is desirable but not mandatory.
Desirable Experience
- Experience working with insurance or insurtech platforms, particularly life insurance, pensions or protection products.
- Familiarity with cloud-based architectures and distributed systems.
- Knowledge of Python or other scripting languages for data processing and automation.
- Exposure to policy administration systems or actuarial modelling platforms.
- Understanding of modern technologies such as AI, automation or analytics in insurance.
