Roles and Responsibilities :
Job Summary:
The Rolling Mill Inspection Engineer is responsible for ensuring that raw materials, in-process materials, and finished rolled products meet specified quality, dimensional, mechanical, and surface requirements. The role involves inspection, testing, defect identification, documentation, traceability, and coordination with production and quality teams to control non-conforming products.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform incoming, in-process, and final inspection of rolled products.
- Inspect billets, blooms, slabs, bars, rods, sections, coils, or plates as applicable.
- Verify dimensions such as thickness, width, diameter, length, straightness, flatness, and profile.
- Identify and classify surface defects including cracks, laps, seams, scratches, roll marks, scabs, laminations, pits, and edge defects.
- Monitor product quality during different stages of the rolling process.
- Ensure compliance with customer specifications and applicable standards such as ASTM, EN, JIS, IS, API, or internal standards.
- Coordinate mechanical, chemical, and metallurgical testing.
- Review test results including tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, hardness, bend, and impact tests.
- Ensure proper heat number, batch number, and product traceability.
- Raise NCRs for non-conforming products and ensure proper segregation and disposition.
- Participate in root cause analysis and corrective and preventive actions.
- Prepare inspection reports, test certificates, and quality records.
- Ensure inspection instruments are calibrated and properly maintained.
- Coordinate with production, quality assurance, laboratory, and maintenance departments.
- Support customer inspections and third-party inspections.
- Follow safety procedures and quality management system requirements.

- Knowledge of steel manufacturing and rolling mill processes.
- Understanding of hot rolling or cold rolling operations.
- Dimensional inspection and tolerance interpretation.
- Surface defect identification.
- Knowledge of steel grades and material specifications.
- Mechanical testing knowledge.
- Basic metallurgical knowledge.
- Understanding of NDT methods such as UT, MT, PT, and Eddy Current Testing where applicable.
- Knowledge of measuring instruments and calibration.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and product specifications.
- Understanding of material traceability and heat number control.

Job Requirements :
- 2-15 years of experience in a Rolling Mill Engineer role or similar position.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical testing methods (e.g., dimension control, hardness testing).
- Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings for design purposes.
- Experience working with traceability systems for tracking product data.
