Role Overview

Position Details: Associate Professor - Paediatrics; 2 positions; Department of Paediatrics; reports to the Professor / Head of Unit; work location: Gangtok, Sikkim.

This mid-senior academic-clinical role combines undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervised clinical service, assessment, research guidance, and assigned unit administration. The incumbent will help MBBS students, interns, and postgraduate medical students build safe, evidence-informed paediatric knowledge and practical competence. The role supports high-quality outpatient, inpatient, emergency, NICU, and PICU care while contributing to patient satisfaction and continuous improvement.

The Associate

Professor works under the Professor / Head of Unit and may lead unit activities when authorised.

Key Responsibilities

- Deliver competency-based lectures, tutorials, bedside teaching, demonstrations, and clinical discussions for MBBS students, interns, and postgraduate medical students.
- Formulate the rotational undergraduate teaching schedule and coordinate faculty inputs to maintain complete, timely academic coverage.
- Plan, conduct, and document internal examinations and periodic assessments using approved standards, blueprints, records, and constructive learner feedback.
- Supervise seminars, case presentations, journal clubs, clinical postings, procedural learning, and academic mentoring across paediatric services.
- Provide outpatient and inpatient paediatric care with the unit team and support evidence-informed diagnosis, treatment, discharge, and follow-up decisions.
- Serve as first on call for paediatric emergencies on assigned duty days and escalate difficult or unstable cases promptly.
- Supervise or perform appropriate procedures in the NICU, PICU, outpatient department, wards, and emergency settings within authorised privileges.
- Report complex, high-risk, and emergency cases to the Unit In-charge or Head of Department and document decisions accurately.
- Cover assigned consultant responsibilities during approved leave or service gaps to maintain continuity of teaching and patient care.
- Lead assigned unit administration, including duty rosters, work allocation, coordination, and staff guidance, when delegated.
- Support need assessment, specification development, procurement inputs,



and responsible utilisation of paediatric medical equipment.
- Guide learner and departmental research through question development, protocol review, ethical practice, analysis, writing, and dissemination.
- Advance patient satisfaction, safety, quality indicators, infection prevention, audit, and continual clinical-service improvement.
- Maintain academic, clinical, research, and statutory records while completing other duties assigned by the Head of Department.

Required Qualifications The candidate must hold an MBBS degree and an NMC-recognised MD or DNB in Paediatrics, or another qualification formally accepted as equivalent under the regulations in force. A valid NMC or State Medical Council registration is mandatory. The candidate must satisfy the applicable Medical Institutions (Qualifications of Faculty) Regulations, including prescribed research-publication, biomedical-research, and medical-education training requirements, as verified at appointment. Required Experience The standard academic pathway requires 4+ years as Assistant Professor in Paediatrics at an NMC-recognised medical institution; 5+ years is required where the candidate's applicable NMC route prescribes the longer threshold. Any alternative statutory pathway must be fully documented and independently verified. Relevant experience must include formal undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, learner assessment, clinical supervision, and paediatric patient care.

Demonstrated exposure to NICU, PICU, outpatient, inpatient, and emergency services in a teaching-hospital environment is essential.

Technical and Functional Skills

- Paediatric clinical assessment, decision-making, documentation, referral, discharge planning, and escalation across OPD, wards, NICU, PICU, and emergencies.
- Competency-based medical education, lesson planning, teaching schedules, internal assessment, question setting, evaluation, feedback, and academic recordkeeping.
- Clinical supervision of learners and safe oversight of authorised paediatric and neonatal procedures within institutional protocols.




- Research methods, ethics, literature appraisal, protocol development, data interpretation, manuscript guidance, and NMC-compliant publication evidence.
- Quality improvement, patient safety, infection prevention, audit, duty-roster planning, equipment inputs, and multidisciplinary coordination.

These preferences do not replace mandatory NMC eligibility.

Professional Tenure and Background

Expected progression includes recognised postgraduate training, Senior Residency or an accepted equivalent pathway, and an Assistant Professor appointment meeting the applicable 4+ years or 5+ years NMC threshold. Candidates should show sustained paediatric service, measurable teaching contributions, documented research, and ethical conduct in recognised teaching institutions.
