Role Overview The Assistant Professor - Forensic Medicine & Toxicology is a full time academic faculty position responsible for teaching, assessment, medico-legal practice, research, and departmental service. The role supports undergraduate MBBS students, postgraduate medical students, and interns through competency-based instruction, supervised practical learning, and reliable academic evaluation. Reporting to the Head of Department, the incumbent will contribute to autopsy services, expert opinions, court duties, curriculum delivery, and institutional responsibilities.

The position requires sound professional judgment, ethical conduct, accurate documentation, and the ability to connect forensic principles with clinically and legally relevant practice.

Key Responsibilities a. Deliver structured lectures, practical demonstrations, tutorials, seminars, and supervised training for MBBS, postgraduate medical students, and interns.

b. Design teaching schedules, lesson plans, learning resources, competency maps, and assessment activities aligned with the approved curriculum and applicable NMC standards.

c. Conduct medico-legal autopsies and related examinations within authorized scope, maintaining accuracy, dignity, biosafety, evidence integrity, and complete contemporaneous records.

d. Prepare clear post-mortem reports, medico-legal opinions, certificates, and advisory inputs for authorized public authorities when formally required.

e. Attend court proceedings, present impartial medical evidence, explain findings within professional competence, and maintain secure case documentation.

f. Develop and administer internal assessments, practical examinations, viva voce evaluations, university examinations, feedback processes, and remediation plans.

g. Guide student research, dissertations, presentations, and scholarly projects while ensuring ethical approval, methodological rigor, and responsible research conduct.

h. Undertake independent and collaborative research, contribute to publications, and participate in seminars, webinars, conferences, workshops, and continuing professional development.

i. Maintain the departmental museum, specimens, displays, registers, inventories, teaching aids, and associated documentation in accordance with safety and ethical requirements.

j. Coordinate assigned departmental activities, academic records, accreditation evidence, timetables, examination duties, and other responsibilities delegated by authorized institutional leadership.

k. Complete or maintain applicable faculty-development requirements,



including biomedical research and medical-education training prescribed by current regulations or institutional policy.

l. Uphold confidentiality, impartiality, chain-of-custody controls, qualified ethics, infection prevention, quality systems, and respectful interprofessional collaboration.

Required Qualifications

MBBS and MD/DNB in Forensic Medicine and Toxicology from institutions and programmes recognized for faculty eligibility under current National Medical Commission requirements are mandatory. The candidate must hold active registration with the relevant State Medical Council or NMC-recognized registration authority, as applicable. DNB candidates must satisfy any additional teaching-equivalence or Senior Residency requirement applicable to the awarding institution and prevailing regulations.

All degrees, registrations, experience records, and equivalence documents must be valid and independently verifiable.

Required Experience The minimum requirement is one year of qualifying post-PG experience in the concerned subject, normally as a Senior Resident in a recognized medical institution, or another pathway expressly recognized under current NMC regulations. Recognized alternatives may include eligible postgraduate Tutor experience, qualifying Armed Forces experience, or qualifying government-hospital service, subject to documentary verification and the conditions prescribed for that pathway. Candidates should demonstrate relevant exposure to medical teaching, medico-legal autopsy work, report preparation, court processes, and departmental administration.

A total of 2-4 years of relevant post-PG teaching or medico-legal experience is preferred.

Technical and Functional Skills The role requires working knowledge of forensic pathology, toxicology, thanatology, medical jurisprudence, autopsy technique, injury interpretation, preservation and dispatch of samples, chain of custody, medico-legal documentation, expert opinion, and courtroom testimony. The candidate should be able to apply competency-based medical education, curriculum planning, student assessment, feedback, research methodology, ethics, scientific writing, and basic biostatistical interpretation.



Proficiency with presentation software, digital learning platforms, academic records, literature databases, and routine office applications is expected.

Preferred or Value-Added Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates who have completed the Basic Course in Biomedical Research and relevant medical-education or faculty-development training; have verifiable publications, conference presentations, or student-guidance experience; and have handled court testimony, curriculum development, university examinations, accreditation documentation, or museum curation. Training in research ethics, positive clinical practice, educational technology, simulation, or quality improvement will strengthen the candidature.

Professional Tenure and Background An appropriate career path includes MBBS, recognized postgraduate specialization in Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, and qualifying post-PG experience. The preferred profile offers 2-4 years of relevant exposure in recognized medical colleges, teaching hospitals, authorized medico-legal services, or other institutions accepted under current NMC pathways.
