A. About the Role:
The Director / Associate Director Management Consulting will be responsible for driving business growth and leading consulting engagements across Power Markets, Regulatory & Policy, Distribution Operations, and commercial matters related to Generation, Distribution, Transmission & Renewables Space. The role involves Business Development, selling Mercados' existing portfolio of solutions to new and existing clients, client leadership, team management, and quality assurance across projects, including bid process management for power procurement, evaluation of new initiatives, internal feasibility assessments, and preparation of concept notes and thought leadership papers. The AD/D is also expected to lead the development of high-quality presentations for senior client leadership, conferences, webinars, and seminars.
B. Detailed expectations from the role:
The Director / Associate Director will report to senior leadership and will have end-to-end ownership of business growth, client relationships, and project delivery, with a key focus on managing and expanding Mercados' presence in the Southern region market. Key expectations include:
- Drive business development in the Southern region, identifying new opportunities and building a strong pipeline of consulting mandates.
- Lead efforts to sell Mercados' existing portfolio of solutions and services to new and existing clients across the region.
- Lead and manage multiple ongoing and future consulting assignments in the power and renewable energy sector, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality outputs.
- Provide strategic advisory on energy policies, regulations, incentives, and reforms related to power generation, power procurement, and renewable energy.
- Oversee bid process management assignments for procurement of power by distribution licensees.
- Lead analysis of policy and regulatory developments and assess their implications on client businesses, providing actionable recommendations.
- Act as the primary point of contact for clients in the Southern region, leading discussions, meetings, and stakeholder engagements.
- Mentor and guide team members, review their work, and ensure consistency, accuracy, and quality in deliverables.
- Coordinate closely with internal teams to manage project execution, resolve issues, and maintain delivery schedules.
- Lead preparation and presentation of concept notes, thought leadership papers, and client presentations for senior management forums.
- Represent the organization in client meetings, conferences, workshops, and industry events across the Southern region, as required.
- Foster a collaborative, high-ownership team culture aligned with organizational goals.
C. Required skill set
- Proven track record in business development, client acquisition, and revenue growth within a consulting or advisory environment, ideally within the Southern region market.
- Demonstrated ability to sell a portfolio of consulting solutions to new and existing clients, and to build long-term senior client relationships.
- Proven ability to lead multiple consulting engagements and manage complex assignments in a fast-paced consulting environment.
- Strong understanding of the power sector value chain, with experience in at least two of the following areas Power Markets,
Power Distribution or Renewables and the ability to translate this expertise into new business opportunities for the firm.
- Demonstrated experience working with a wide range of stakeholders, including Private, State, and Central Generators, Electricity Regulatory Commissions, Government bodies, and Power Utilities.
- Valuable understanding of the power sector landscape, including emerging policies and regulations, and their implications for clients.
- Excellent leadership, mentoring, and team management capabilities, with experience managing and growing consulting teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex concepts and thought leadership clearly to senior stakeholders.
- High level of analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making ability.
- Proven ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with cross-functional teams.
- Proficiency in data analysis, reporting, and presentation tools (PowerPoint, Excel, etc.).
- Strong research orientation with the ability to translate insights into compelling client-facing and thought leadership content.
D. Education and Experience
- B.E/B. Tech or Equivalent with MBA in relevant field.
- Minimum 15 years of experience in at-least two of the following areas- Power Markets, Power Distribution and Renewable.
- Energy/Power consultancy experience will be preferred.
- Preference will be given to candidates having current working experience in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and/or other Southern States.
E. Location
- Base location shall be Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
- Open to travel for project execution and management
