Responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining a lathe machine to manufacture precision components according to engineering drawings and quality standards.

Job Description – Lathe Machine Operator

Position: Lathe Machine Operator

Department: Production / Machine Shop

Reporting To: Production Supervisor / Shop Manager

Key Responsibilities:

Operate conventional (manual) lathe machines safely and efficiently.

Read and understand engineering drawings, blueprints, and job specifications.

Set up jobs by mounting workpieces, selecting cutting tools, and adjusting machine settings.

Perform turning, facing, drilling, boring, threading, grooving, knurling, taper turning, and parting operations.

Measure finished components using vernier calipers, micrometers, dial gauges, bore gauges, and other measuring instruments.

Maintain dimensional accuracy and surface finish as per drawing tolerances.

Inspect components during and after machining to ensure quality.

Replace or sharpen cutting tools as required.

Perform routine machine cleaning, lubrication, and preventive maintenance.

Follow all safety procedures and use appropriate PPE.





Maintain production records and report any machine issues or defects.

Keep the work area clean and organized (5S).

Required Skills

Knowledge of conventional lathe machine operations.

Ability to read engineering drawings.

Familiarity with precision measuring instruments.

Understanding of cutting tools, feeds, speeds, and machining parameters.

Basic knowledge of different materials such as MS, EN8, SS, brass, and aluminum.

Positive attention to detail and quality.

Qualification:

1–5 years of experience in operating conventional lathe machines (or as required).

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand for long periods.

Ability to lift and handle machine components safely.

Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.

Preferred Experience

Experience in hydraulic cylinder component machining (rods, glands, pistons, end caps, bushes, etc.).

Knowledge of threading standards (Metric, BSP, UNF/UNC, etc.)

Basic knowledge of milling, drilling, and other workshop machines is an advantage.
