Service Engineer – Gas Engines
Location: Pune, Maharashtra, India
Department: Service & After-Sales
Reporting to: Service Manager / Managing Director – India
Employment Type: Full-time
1. Position Summary
We are looking for a technically strong and customer-focused Service Engineer – Gas Engines to support the installation, commissioning, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of gas-engine-based power-generation systems in India.
The candidate will be responsible for providing field service support for engines running on natural gas, biogas, syngas and other gaseous fuels, including generator sets, CHP/cogeneration systems and associated Balance of Plant (BoP).
As this is a newly established MNC operation in India, the candidate will also play an important role in establishing the local service organisation, service procedures, customer support processes, spare-parts planning and service network.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Installation & Commissioning
- Support installation and commissioning of gas engines and generator systems at customer sites.
- Inspect engine installation, piping, gas train, exhaust, cooling and electrical systems.
- Carry out pre-commissioning checks and ensure installation conforms to technical requirements.
- Start up and commission engines in accordance with manufacturer procedures.
- Carry out engine performance checks and record commissioning parameters.
- Support synchronization and load testing of generator sets.
- Coordinate with EPC contractors, customers and internal engineering teams during commissioning.
B. Field Service & Maintenance
- Perform preventive, corrective and breakdown maintenance of gas engines.
- Carry out routine engine inspections and maintenance according to operating hours.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical and control-system problems.
- Carry out engine overhauling and component replacement as required.
- Inspect and maintain:
- Engine, Turbocharger, Ignition system, Gas mixer, Gas train, Lubrication system, Cooling system, Exhaust system, Starting system, Sensors and actuators, Generator/alternator, Control panel, Synchronization system
- Analyse engine operating parameters and identify abnormal conditions at an early stage.
C. Troubleshooting
- Attend customer breakdowns and emergency service calls.
- Diagnose problems using engine controller/ECU data, alarms, fault codes and operating parameters.
- Troubleshoot:
- Misfiring, High exhaust temperature, Low/high gas pressure, Lubricating-oil problems, Cooling-water temperature issues, Ignition-system failures, Turbocharger problems, Vibration, Starting problems, Engine knocking, Generator/electrical faults, Control-system faults, Emission-related issues
- Conduct root-cause analysis and recommend corrective actions.
- Provide remote technical support to customers and local service partners when required.
3. Gas-Fuel Knowledge
The candidate should develop a strong understanding of different gaseous fuels and their effect on engine performance.
Experience with the following will be advantageous:
- Natural gas, Biogas, CBG/biomethane, Syngas, Landfill gas, Sewage gas, Producer gas, The engineer should understand important gas parameters such as:
- Methane content, Calorific value, Gas pressure, Gas flow, H₂S, Moisture, Siloxanes, Gas temperature, Gas quality fluctuations
Particular attention should be given to the impact of gas quality on engine efficiency, ignition, knocking, exhaust temperatures, emissions and engine life.
4. Service Contract & Customer Support
- Execute preventive-maintenance service contracts at customer sites.
- Prepare service reports after every site visit.
- Maintain accurate records of engine operating hours and maintenance history.
- Advise customers on preventive maintenance and valuable operating practices.
- Monitor engine performance and recommend corrective/preventive actions.
- Support warranty investigations and warranty claim documentation.
- Maintain strong relationships with customers and provide professional after-sales support.
5. Spare Parts & Technical Support
- Identify required spare parts based on engine condition and maintenance schedules.
- Prepare spare-parts recommendations and lists for customers.
- Coordinate with the Service Manager and Spare Parts team for availability.
- Support emergency spare-parts requirements.
- Maintain records of replaced components and failure history.
- Provide technical input for developing the Indian spare-parts inventory.
7. Technical Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare detailed service and commissioning reports.
- Document failure analysis and root-cause investigations.
- Maintain service history for each engine.
- Record operating parameters and maintenance activities.
- Prepare technical recommendations for customers.
- Escalate major technical issues to the international engineering team.
- Maintain accurate service data in the company's ERP/CRM/service-management system.
8. Coordination with Global MNC Team
- Work closely with the company's engineering and service teams located outside India.
- Participate in technical training provided by the global organisation.
- Communicate field problems and technical observations to the global engineering team.
- Implement global service standards and procedures in India.
- Participate in international technical meetings and training programs as required.
9. Health, Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company and customer safety procedures.
- Ensure safe working practices during engine maintenance and commissioning.
- Follow appropriate procedures for working with:
- High-pressure gas, Electrical systems, Hot surfaces, Rotating equipment, Pressurised systems, Lubricating oil and chemicals
- Use appropriate PPE and ensure site safety requirements are followed.
- Report unsafe conditions and incidents immediately.
10. Candidate Profile
Education
- Diploma / Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Automobile, Electrical, Mechatronics or related engineering discipline.
- ITI/Diploma with strong relevant gas-engine experience may also be considered.

Typically 3–8 years of experience in field service, maintenance or commissioning of:
13. Travel Requirement
The position requires extensive travel across India, including:
- Customer sites, Power plants, Biogas/CBG plants, Industrial facilities, EPC project sites, Commissioning locations, The engineer should be willing to travel at short notice for emergency breakdown support.
