You can reach the Top of the Ladder without Managing Anyone. From Senior level onward, choose your path through people leadership or deeper technical expertise, with both advancing equally against the same published criteria.
- Level 1-2 - Engineer: Ships feature within a defined design. Learn the domain, the codebase, and the deployment path.
- Senior Engineer: Runs a service end-to-end, including production. Reviews others design work and shares ownership of whats live.
- Level 4 IC Track - Staff Engineer: Sets the architecture across services and the standards other teams follow. No direct reports, same level as an Engineering Manager.
- Level 4 Lead Track - Engineering Manager: Handles delivery and the people doing it. Still writes code, but that isnt what the job is measured on.
- Principal Architect / Director: Sets technical direction across a practice, and gives the architecture recommendations clients hear on the first call.
