JD - Role Overview

We are looking for two Senior Connected Services Consultants to join an established Ensono delivery team migrating a large estate of Oracle databases to PostgreSQL on Google Cloud.

This is a hands-on engineering role. Leveraging advanced automation and AI tooling, you will personally convert schemas, refactor PL/SQL, configure and monitor replication, prove the migrated data is correct, tune what is slow, and stand up on the call when the database goes live. At Senior level you will also own the technical quality of the databases assigned to you end to end, set the documentation standard for the team, and coach the engineers working alongside you.

The work is a like-for-like replatform, not an application modernisation. Success is measured by databases moved with zero data loss, acceptable performance and no production incident -- not by new features.

The team is small, and progress depends on getting answers out of other organisations. The people who do well here are the ones who chase rather than wait.

Programme Context

- Client : a global business data and analytics organisation. Ensono is the delivery partner.
- Scope : approximately 79 in-scope Oracle 19c databases -- roughly 30 production and 49 non-production -- currently running on AWS RDS and EC2.
- Target : Google Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL. A small number of databases may target MSSQL or MySQL where application compatibility requires it.
- Driver : eliminating Oracle licensing cost, simplifying operations, and giving the client a scalable database platform.
- Term : a 24-month programme. An earlier wave has already been delivered, so the patterns, runbooks and in-house validation tooling exist and work -- you will inherit them, use them and improve them.
- Approach : a repeatable migration factory -- assess, convert, replicate, validate, cut over -- with databases grouped and scheduled by application team.
- Team : a Delivery Manager, a Technical Lead / Replatform Architect, a Business Analyst, QA Engineers and Conversion Engineers. You are responsible for technical execution; the Technical Lead is accountable for the architecture and the decisions that shape it.
- Ways of working : Agile/Scrum. Daily stand-ups, sprint planning, retrospectives, peer review of all code, automated testing, and knowledge transfer planned from day one.

Key Responsibilities

Assessment and conversion

- Carry out pre-migration assessment and complexity analysis of assigned source databases.
- Convert Oracle DDL to PostgreSQL, reviewing and remediating the output of automated conversion tooling rather than accepting it at face value.
- Refactor PL/SQL into PL/pgSQL -- packages, procedures, functions and triggers.
- Define the target schema and agree data type mappings,

taking a deliberate decision wherever a mapping carries a risk of precision loss or truncation.
- Agree schema contracts with application teams and support them through their own refactoring.

Replication and data movement

- Prepare source databases for replication -- archive logging, supplemental logging, migration users and grants.
- Configure, run and monitor full-load and change data capture (CDC) migration jobs.
- Design the sync data flow for each database so that cutover downtime is minimised.

Validation and quality

- Execute and interpret the programmes validation gates: schema comparison, data type validation, row count reconciliation, row-level hash comparison of every row, and performance benchmarking against the Oracle baseline.
- Investigate performance regressions to root cause -- missing or unanalysed indexes, stale statistics, implicit casts caused by type mappings, inefficient PL/pgSQL rewrites -- and tune until the database meets its threshold or the delta is justified in writing.
- Triage and remediate defects through to zero open Severity 1 and Severity 2 issues at sign-off.
- Own the conversion and engineering quality of your assigned databases end to end , from assessment through to production sign-off.

Cutover and release

- Support production cutovers: quiescing and draining the source, promoting the target, running post-promotion scripts, refreshing statistics, transferring object ownership and removing migration artefacts.
- Participate in a weekend release rota. Release windows typically open at 04:00 UK on Sunday (23:00 ET Saturday). Most releases complete within 24 hours; some extend across a 48-hour period, with appropriate and agreed rest periods. Releases are shared across the team on a rota.
- Monitor the target through the release window and respond to issues as they arise.

Leadership and knowledge

- Pair with and coach less experienced engineers, sharing approaches that raise the teams overall capability.
- Set and guide the standard for runbooks, decision records and technical documentation, judging the right level of detail for each audience.
- Run knowledge-transfer sessions and contribute to handover into the clients support teams.
- Contribute improvements back to the shared conversion and validation tooling.

Collaboration

- Work directly with client application teams, DBAs, cloud operations and network teams.
- Raise and actively drive infrastructure, network and access requests through the clients ticketing processes -- much of the programmes progress depends on this being chased properly.
- Plan and estimate your own work, flag blockers early, and escalate when a dependency is at risk.

Must-Have Skills

Technical

- Strong SQL, with deep working knowledge of both Oracle 19c and PostgreSQL 14 or later.
- At least one Oracle to PostgreSQL migration taken through to production.
- PL/SQL and PL/pgSQL -- able to read, refactor and debug non-trivial stored code.
- A working understanding of where Oracle to PostgreSQL type mapping goes wrong: NUMBER(p,s) precision and scale, DATE to TIMESTAMP and the loss of the time component, VARCHAR2(n BYTE) byte-versus-character truncation, timezone handling, and CLOB / BLOB conversion.
- Change data capture and logical replication concepts -- archive logging, supplemental logging, log mining or equivalent.
- Data reconciliation and validation: row counts, checksums or hashing,

and the collation and deterministic ordering problems that arise when comparing two different database engines.
- Query performance analysis and tuning on both platforms -- execution plans, indexing strategy, statistics.
- Cloud-hosted databases: AWS RDS and/or Google Cloud SQL.
- Scripting in Python and/or PowerShell or shell.
- Git, with sound configuration management, CI and versioning practice.
- Automated testing discipline, including integration and end-to-end tests written in a behaviour-driven style.

Delivery and consulting

- Able to work as a standalone senior engineer on a workstream without needing day-to-day support.
- Plans, estimates and prioritises complex work, and delivers against sprint objectives.
- Communicates complex technical matters clearly and credibly to varied audiences, including people who are not database specialists -- for example explaining a data-loss risk to an application owner in terms they can act on.
- Articulates why a given solution, tool or approach was chosen, not just what it does.
- Builds trusted relationships across client teams and becomes a go-to person, including the persistence to chase other organisations for access, approvals and answers.
- Understands the commercial purpose of the programme and how their own work contributes to it.
- Coaches and gives constructive feedback to other engineers.
- Recognises the documentation needs of different stakeholders and produces accordingly.

Working arrangements

- Fluent written and spoken English.
- Able to work UK business hours.
- Willing and able to take part in a weekend release rota as described above.

Valuable-to-Have Skills

- Google Cloud Database Migration Service -- conversion workspaces and migration jobs. This is the programmes incumbent tooling; training will be given, so experience is an advantage rather than a requirement.
- Striim, Oracle GoldenGate or comparable CDC replication products.
- A current professional-level cloud certification, Google Cloud preferred. Associate level with a willingness to progress will also be considered.
- Google Cloud networking: VPC peering, Private Service Connect, private IP and IAM.
- C# / .NET or Java -- the programmes in-house validation suite is .NET-based.
- Liquibase and Java 17.
- MSSQL or MySQL as alternative migration targets.
- An Oracle DBA background -- RMAN, AWR, log mining.
- Recognised depth in a specialism such as replication, performance tuning, or LOB and character set handling.
- Enterprise change management: ServiceNow, Jira, and working within a Change Advisory Board process.
- Terraform or another infrastructure-as-code tool.

Relevant Experience Required

- 6 to 10 years in database engineering, database migration or platform consultancy.
- Two or more completed heterogeneous database migrations, at least one of which was Oracle to PostgreSQL.
- Experience delivering into a repeatable, high-volume migration programme rather than one-off projects.
- Experience owning a workstream end to end, including knowing when to delegate and when to escalate.
- Experience on large programmes with multiple teams collaborating across organisational boundaries.
- Experience of production cutovers under formal change control, such as a Change Advisory Board.
- A track record in consultancy or nearshore delivery, working directly with client teams rather than at arms length.
- Experience coaching or mentoring engineers.
- Demonstrable experience of planned out-of-hours and weekend release work.
- A degree in a computing discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Must be able to pass background screening before being granted client system access.
