We are seeking a warm, experienced and engaging Freelance Primary English Teacher to deliver high-quality online lessons to Australia-based students in Years 1 to 6.

The Role

The successful candidate will teach primary students across the three strands of the Australian Curriculum: English – Language, Literature and Literacy. You will build strong foundations in reading, spelling, grammar and writing, and help students prepare for NAPLAN (Years 3 and 5), school assessments and, where required, Opportunity Class (OC) and selective-entry tests.

This freelance opportunity is ideal for a patient and nurturing educator who can make literacy engaging for young learners and adapt lessons to each child's reading level and confidence.

Key Responsibilities

- Deliver engaging, interactive and age-appropriate online English lessons for Years 1–6.
- Teach phonics, phonemic awareness, decoding and reading fluency for early-years learners.
- Develop reading comprehension, including literal, inferential and evaluative understanding of texts.
- Teach spelling, vocabulary, punctuation and grammar in line with Australian Curriculum content descriptions.
- Teach the text types Australian schools assess: narrative, persuasive, informative, recount, procedural and response writing.
- Prepare students for NAPLAN reading, writing and conventions of language assessments in Years 3 and 5.
- Support preparation for OC, selective-entry and scholarship reading and writing tests when required.




- Plan lessons that align with the relevant state curriculum and the student's school programme.
- Use Australian English spelling and conventions consistently.
- Identify reading and writing gaps and provide targeted support.
- Review students' writing and give specific, encouraging and constructive feedback.
- Assign appropriate homework and reading tasks and monitor completion.
- Track student progress against year-level achievement standards and adjust lesson plans.
- Maintain accurate lesson notes, attendance records and progress updates.
- Communicate professionally with students, parents and the Smavy Academy team.
- Participate in teacher training, academic reviews and periodic parent–teacher meetings when required.
- Maintain a safe, respectful and encouraging online learning environment in line with child-secure practices.

Essential Requirements

- Bachelor's or Master's degree in English, Education, Linguistics, Literature or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience teaching English or literacy to primary-aged children.
- Strong knowledge of phonics, early reading development, grammar and primary writing genres.
- Excellent spoken and written English, with explicit pronunciation suitable for young learners.
- Ability to explain concepts simply and keep young students engaged online.
- Ability to assess student work accurately and provide specific, actionable feedback.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to different abilities, learning styles and attention spans.
- Confidence using online teaching platforms, digital whiteboards and interactive resources.
- Reliable computer, high-speed internet connection, clear audio and a suitable teaching environment.
- Availability during Australian after-school hours (approximately 10:30 am – 6:30 pm IST) and/or weekends.
- Commitment to punctuality, professionalism and consistent student support.
- Willingness to complete identity,



qualification and background-verification checks and child-safety training.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

- Formal teaching qualification such as B.Ed., M.Ed., D.El.Ed., or an equivalent credential.
- Experience teaching the Australian Curriculum, Victorian Curriculum or NSW English syllabus.
- Experience preparing students for NAPLAN, OC or selective-entry tests.
- Training in a structured literacy or synthetic phonics programme.
- Experience supporting students with EAL/D needs or learning difficulties.
- Experience delivering one-to-one online classes to international students.
- Familiarity with the Australian National Principles for Child Secure Organisations.
