Job Description – Lab Manager

Position: Lab Manager
Department: Laboratory Operations
Location: Vadodara, Gujarat
Experience: 5+ years in Diagnostic Laboratory Operations
Qualification: B.Sc./M.Sc. MLT, Medical Laboratory Technology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Life Sciences, or relevant qualification
Reporting To: Centre Head / Operations Head / Management

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced and responsible Lab Manager to oversee the complete day-to-day operations of a diagnostic laboratory.

The Lab Manager will be responsible for ensuring smooth laboratory functioning, quality and QC compliance, TAT achievement, manpower management, inventory control, equipment uptime, SOP implementation, documentation and patient service quality.

The ideal candidate should have strong hands-on experience in diagnostic laboratory operations and the ability to independently manage laboratory technicians, phlebotomists, supervisors and support staff.

Key Responsibilities1. Laboratory Operations

- Manage the day-to-day operations of the diagnostic laboratory.
- Ensure smooth functioning of pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical processes.
- Monitor sample collection, accessioning, processing, testing and reporting.
- Ensure proper sample identification, labelling, storage and disposal.
- Monitor daily sample volumes and workload.
- Ensure uninterrupted laboratory services during operating hours.
- Coordinate with Centre Head, doctors, technicians, phlebotomists and support teams.
- Handle day-to-day operational issues and escalations.

2. Quality Control & Compliance

- Ensure strict adherence to laboratory SOPs and quality procedures.
- Monitor IQC and other quality control parameters.
- Monitor sample rejection, testing errors and quality deviations.
- Identify root causes of quality issues and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure proper documentation of QC records and corrective actions.
- Monitor pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical quality.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laboratory quality and safety standards.
- Maintain the laboratory in an audit-ready condition.
- Support NABL/quality audits and implementation of corrective actions, wherever applicable.

3. TAT & Productivity Management

- Monitor daily and department-wise TAT.
- Identify reasons for delays in sample processing and reporting.
- Ensure samples are processed and reported within defined TAT.
- Monitor technician productivity and workload distribution.
- Improve laboratory workflow and operational efficiency.
- Take corrective action when TAT targets are consistently missed.

4. Manpower & Team Management

- Supervise laboratory technicians, phlebotomists, lab assistants and support staff.
- Prepare staff duty rosters and shift schedules.
- Monitor attendance, punctuality, discipline and productivity.
- Allocate manpower based on workload and operational requirements.
- Coordinate with HR for recruitment and replacement requirements.
- Conduct staff training and identify skill gaps.
- Ensure employees follow laboratory SOPs,



safety procedures and quality requirements.
- Motivate and develop the laboratory team.

5. Inventory & Reagent Management

- Monitor availability of reagents, consumables, PPE and other laboratory supplies.
- Maintain appropriate stock levels based on workload.
- Prevent stock-outs, overstocking, expiry and wastage.
- Monitor reagent consumption and usage.
- Maintain proper inventory records.
- Conduct periodic physical stock verification.
- Report stock shortages and variances to management.
- Coordinate with Purchase/Stores teams for timely replenishment.
- Ensure proper storage conditions and expiry monitoring of reagents and consumables.

6. Equipment & Maintenance

- Monitor the functioning and uptime of laboratory equipment.
- Ensure preventive maintenance and calibration schedules are followed.
- Coordinate with equipment vendors and service engineers for breakdowns.
- Maintain equipment service and maintenance records.
- Escalate critical equipment breakdowns promptly.
- Minimise equipment downtime and disruption to laboratory operations.
- Ensure proper handling and usage of laboratory equipment by staff.

7. SOP & Documentation

- Ensure all staff follow approved laboratory SOPs.
- Implement new SOPs and process changes as instructed by management.
- Maintain required laboratory records and documentation.
- Ensure proper documentation of QC, equipment maintenance, temperature logs, stock records and other operational activities.
- Identify gaps in existing processes and recommend improvements.

8. Laboratory Safety & Housekeeping

- Ensure compliance with laboratory safety procedures.
- Monitor biomedical waste segregation and disposal.
- Ensure appropriate use of PPE by laboratory staff.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene within the laboratory.
- Ensure proper storage and handling of chemicals and laboratory materials.
- Report and investigate safety incidents where applicable.

9. Patient / Customer Service

- Ensure qualified and timely service to patients and customers.
- Handle laboratory-related patient complaints and operational escalations.
- Coordinate with the Centre Head and relevant teams to resolve complaints.
- Identify recurring service issues and recommend corrective measures.
- Maintain a positive patient experience.

10. MIS & Reporting

- Prepare daily/weekly/monthly laboratory operational reports.
- Monitor sample volumes and department-wise workload.
- Report TAT performance and sample rejection.
- Track QC performance and quality deviations.
- Monitor inventory consumption and wastage.
- Track equipment downtime and maintenance.
- Report manpower availability and productivity.
- Escalate critical operational issues to management.




- Provide recommendations for improving laboratory efficiency.

Required Experience

Mandatory:

- Minimum 5+ years of experience in the Diagnostic Laboratory industry.
- Strong hands-on experience in diagnostic laboratory operations.
- Experience managing laboratory technicians and support staff.
- Good knowledge of laboratory processes and workflow.
- Experience in quality control and quality assurance.
- Experience in TAT monitoring and operational performance.
- Experience in reagent, consumable and inventory management.
- Experience in equipment maintenance coordination.
- Good understanding of laboratory SOPs and documentation.
- Experience handling operational issues and escalations.

Preferred:

- Experience working in a reputed diagnostic laboratory, hospital laboratory or pathology laboratory.
- Exposure to NABL/quality management systems.
- Experience handling automated laboratory equipment.
- Experience managing multiple laboratory departments such as Biochemistry, Hematology, Clinical Pathology and Microbiology.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced diagnostic laboratory professional with strong laboratory management and team-leadership experience.

The candidate should be capable of independently managing the complete operations of a diagnostic laboratory, including technical workflow, quality control, TAT, manpower, inventory, equipment, documentation, safety and customer service.

Candidates with experience as Lab Manager, Laboratory Manager, Lab Supervisor, Senior Lab Supervisor, Laboratory Operations Supervisor or equivalent in a reputed diagnostic laboratory/hospital will be preferred.

Pay: ₹30,000.00 - ₹35,000.00 per month
