About the Role

This position is dedicated entirely to Uganda taxation. The Senior Tax Associate will service only Uganda-based clients and will prepare and file all returns and compliances under Uganda Government tax law and the requirements of the URA (Uganda Revenue Authority). There are no Indian clients and no Indian tax filings attached to this role.

We are looking for a candidate from an Indian CA firm background with solid, hands-on compliance discipline in GST and TDS. That foundation — return preparation, reconciliations, statutory calendars and client follow-up — transfers directly to the Uganda tax framework. Full training and handover on Uganda tax law, the URA portal and firm processes will be provided; prior Uganda experience is not required.

Job Summary

The Senior Tax Associate will manage the day-to-day taxation and compliance activities of a portfolio of Uganda clients — VAT, Withholding Tax, PAYE, NSSF and corporation tax filings — together with the supporting accounting, reconciliation and reporting work. The candidate should be capable of independently handling routine tax matters, maintaining compliance records, coordinating directly with clients, and guiding junior team members.

Candidates with prior experience in a CA Firm will be preferred.

Key Responsibilities

Uganda Taxation & Compliance

- Prepare and file monthly VAT (Value Added Tax) returns on the URA (Uganda Revenue Authority) web portal within statutory timelines.
- Prepare and file monthly WHT (Withholding Tax) returns and maintain withholding tax credit records.
- Prepare and file monthly PAYE (Pay As You Earn) returns, NSSF (National Social Security Fund) schedules and LST (Local Service Tax) where applicable.
- Prepare provisional tax returns and the annual corporation tax return (DT-2002) from audited or management financial statements.
- Perform VAT, EFRIS (Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing System) and ledger reconciliations, and reconcile books of accounts with URA portal data and client records.
- Generate PRNs (Payment Registration Numbers) and track payment of tax liabilities to due date.

- Maintain client-wise Uganda tax compliance calendars and ensure every return is filed on time.
- Handle routine URA notices, queries and information requests, and compile supporting documentation for review.
- Keep up to date with amendments to Uganda tax legislation and URA practice notes, and apply them to client filings.

Accounting & Reporting

- Maintain books of accounts and pass accounting entries in Tally Prime.
- Review accounting entries and books of accounts prepared by the team.
- Perform ledger scrutiny and account reconciliations.
- Ensure accuracy of financial records and supporting documentation.
- Prepare tax working papers, schedules and compliance reports.
- Generate and maintain MIS (Management Information System) reports using MS Excel.

Client Coordination

- Coordinate independently with Uganda-based clients over email and calls for tax data, documentation and compliance requirements.
- Act as the first point of contact on assigned engagements and follow up proactively on pending information.
- Work closely with the Uganda office team on client matters, filings and deadlines.

Team Handling & Coordination

- Allocate work among junior team members and monitor task completion.
- Review work performed by junior associates to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Guide and support team members on Uganda tax and accounting-related activities.
- Track deadlines and ensure timely completion of assigned tasks.
- Report work status and compliance updates to management.
- Assist in training and mentoring junior team members.

Required Skills & Knowledge

- Strong working knowledge of indirect and direct tax compliance, gained through Indian GST and TDS work.

- Hands-on experience in statutory return preparation and filing on government tax portals.
- Experience in ledger scrutiny, reconciliation and month-end compliance routines.
- Good knowledge of Tally Prime and ERP.
- Advanced working knowledge of MS Excel (VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, Lookup Functions, Data Reconciliation).
- Good spoken and written English — the role involves direct communication with overseas clients.
- Willingness and ability to learn a new tax jurisdiction and apply it accurately.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.

Eligibility Criteria

- B.Com or bachelor’s degree in commerce, M.Com, or CA Drop Out (CA Inter / IPCC).
- 3–5 years of experience in Taxation and Compliance.
- Prior experience in a CA Firm will be an added advantage.
- Experience in handling multiple client accounts and compliance deadlines.
- Prior Uganda or overseas tax experience is not required — training will be provided.

Preferred Candidate Profile

- Ability to independently manage routine tax compliance activities.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good communication and client-handling skills.
- Ability to work under strict statutory deadlines.
- Professional and proactive approach to work.
- Open to building a career in international taxation rather than remaining in Indian compliance work.

What This Role Offers

- International exposure — the entire portfolio is overseas, working under Uganda Government tax law and regulation.
- Direct, independent client coordination with Uganda-based clients.
- Structured training and handover on Uganda tax law, the URA portal and firm processes.
- Exposure to a cross-border professional services practice and to the Uganda office team.
