JOB DESCRIPTION – 2D ECHO TECHNICIAN / CARDIAC SONOGRAPHER

Reporting To: Cardiologist / Medical Director / Diagnostic Department In-Charge

Job Purpose

To perform high-quality 2D Echocardiography and related cardiac diagnostic procedures accurately and safely, obtain appropriate cardiac images and measurements, maintain proper patient documentation, and assist the cardiologist in the evaluation of cardiac conditions.

Key Responsibilities

- Perform 2D Echocardiography for OPD, IPD, ICU and Emergency patients as advised by the treating doctor or cardiologist.
- Obtain standard echocardiographic views including:
- Parasternal long-axis view
- Parasternal short-axis view
- Apical four-chamber view
- Apical two-chamber view
- Apical three-chamber view
- Subcostal views
- Suprasternal views whenever required
- Perform appropriate M-Mode, Color Doppler, Pulse-Wave Doppler and Continuous-Wave Doppler measurements.
- Record cardiac chamber dimensions and relevant parameters including:
- LV function and ejection fraction
- Regional wall motion
- Chamber size
- Valvular morphology and function
- Doppler gradients
- Pericardial effusion
- Pulmonary pressures
- IVC assessment
- Other relevant measurements as required
- Identify technically significant findings and immediately alert the cardiologist or treating doctor in emergency or critical cases.
- Perform bedside 2D Echo in ICU, Emergency, SICU/MICU and wards whenever required.
- Assist the cardiologist during specialized echocardiography procedures where applicable.
- Prepare patients appropriately and explain the procedure before performing the test.
- Confirm patient identity and clinical indication before starting the examination.
- Maintain patient privacy, dignity and confidentiality throughout the procedure.
- Ensure proper positioning of patients to obtain optimal images.
- Maintain high-quality image acquisition and save all relevant images and measurements in the system.
- Ensure every study contains the required patient details, date, clinical history and referring doctor’s information.
- Prepare preliminary technical worksheets or measurements for review by the cardiologist.
- Final interpretation and clinical reporting shall be done/approved by the authorized cardiologist or physician as per hospital protocol.

Patient Coordination

- Coordinate with OPD, IPD, Emergency, ICU and Nursing teams for timely completion of requested investigations.
- Give priority to emergency and critically ill patients.
- Inform the concerned department immediately if a patient requires urgent medical attention.
- Handle elderly, pediatric, postoperative and critically ill patients carefully during the procedure.
- Ensure minimum waiting time for scheduled patients.

Equipment Responsibilities

- Operate the 2D Echo machine correctly and safely.
- Check the machine, probes, ECG leads and accessories before starting daily procedures.
- Clean and disinfect probes and equipment after every patient according to infection-control protocols.
- Report equipment malfunction immediately to the department in-charge or biomedical team.
- Ensure proper shutdown and safe handling of the equipment.
- Maintain equipment usage and maintenance records wherever required.
- Ensure adequate availability of ECG electrodes, ultrasound gel, tissues and other consumables.

Documentation & Records

- Maintain daily records of all 2D Echo procedures performed.
- Maintain patient name, UHID/IP number, age, gender, referring doctor, diagnosis/indication and procedure details.
- Ensure reports and images are properly stored and retrievable.
- Maintain OPD/IPD investigation registers as per hospital requirements.
- Ensure billing confirmation or authorization is completed before elective investigations, wherever applicable.
- Submit daily/monthly procedure statistics to the management when requested.

Infection Control & Safety

- Follow hospital infection-control policies.
- Perform hand hygiene before and after every patient interaction.
- Clean probes and examination areas appropriately.
- Use PPE whenever clinically indicated.
- Follow biomedical waste segregation protocols.
- Follow electrical and equipment safety procedures.

Emergency Responsibilities

The technician should recognize potentially serious findings and immediately inform the cardiologist/treating doctor, particularly in situations such as:

- Severe LV dysfunction
- Massive pericardial effusion / suspected cardiac tamponade
- Severe valvular abnormalities
- Significant regional wall-motion abnormalities
- Suspected acute right-heart strain
- Intracardiac mass/thrombus when visualized
- Severe pulmonary hypertension
- Any unexpected or potentially life-threatening finding

The technician must not independently provide a final diagnosis to the patient or patient’s relatives unless specifically authorized within their professional scope and hospital policy.

Professional Conduct

- Maintain professional behaviour with patients, attendants, consultants, nursing staff and other hospital employees.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding patient information.
- Avoid discussing unverified findings with patients or attendants.
- Follow instructions issued by the cardiologist and hospital management.




- Maintain punctuality and proper attendance.
- Wear prescribed uniform/ID card during duty hours.
- Maintain cleanliness and discipline in the Echo room.
- Do not leave the department during assigned duty hours without proper handover or authorization.

Qualification

Preferred qualifications may include:

- Diploma / Degree in Cardiac Care Technology, Cardiovascular Technology, Medical Imaging Technology or equivalent recognized qualification.
- Appropriate training/certification in Echocardiography.
- Relevant registration or professional credential wherever required under applicable regulations.

Experience

- Prior experience performing independent 2D Echo image acquisition is preferred.
- Candidate should be capable of performing routine adult echocardiography independently.
- ICU and bedside echocardiography experience is preferred.
- Experience with Doppler studies and cardiac measurements is desirable.

Skills Required

- Good knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology.
- Strong understanding of standard echocardiographic views.
- Ability to obtain diagnostically helpful images.
- Knowledge of Doppler principles and measurements.
- Ability to handle critically ill patients.
- Good communication and patient-handling skills.

Duty & Operational Expectations

- Coordinate with the cardiologist for urgent cases.
- Participate in departmental audits, quality-control activities and hospital training programs.
