1. Job Purpose The Respiratory Therapist will be responsible for providing assessment, monitoring, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with respiratory and pulmonary conditions, particularly those requiring respiratory support during the rehabilitation process.

The role involves working closely with the medical, nursing, physiotherapy, speech and swallow, occupational therapy, and other rehabilitation teams to improve respiratory function, airway clearance, breathing efficiency, secretion management, and overall patient safety.

The therapist will primarily support patients with neurological conditions, stroke, prolonged immobility, reduced respiratory capacity, swallowing-related aspiration risk, and other conditions affecting respiratory function.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Respiratory Assessment

- Conduct comprehensive respiratory assessments based on the patient's medical condition and clinical requirements.
- Assess respiratory rate, breathing pattern, oxygen saturation, breath sounds, cough effectiveness, secretion load, and other relevant parameters.
- Monitor patients for signs of respiratory distress or deterioration.
- Review relevant medical records, investigations, and physician recommendations.
- Establish appropriate respiratory-care goals for individual patients.

B. Respiratory Therapy & Rehabilitation

- Develop and implement individualized respiratory therapy programs.
- Provide breathing exercises and respiratory muscle training as clinically appropriate.
- Assist patients in improving breathing efficiency and respiratory endurance.
- Provide airway-clearance techniques based on patient requirements.
- Assist with secretion management and effective cough techniques.
- Provide positioning and breathing strategies to improve respiratory function.
- Support early mobilization and respiratory rehabilitation in coordination with the physiotherapy team.
- Monitor patient response to therapy and modify treatment accordingly.

C. Oxygen & Respiratory Support

- Monitor patients receiving supplemental oxygen and other prescribed respiratory support.
- Ensure oxygen therapy is administered according to medical orders and established clinical protocols.
- Monitor oxygen saturation and other relevant parameters during therapy.
- Assist with non-invasive respiratory support such as CPAP/BiPAP where within the therapist's professional scope and organizational protocol.
- Ensure appropriate use and basic operational readiness of respiratory-care equipment.
- Identify abnormalities in respiratory support and promptly escalate concerns to the medical team.

D. Airway & Secretion Management

- Assess airway-clearance requirements of patients with reduced cough effectiveness or excessive secretions.
- Provide appropriate airway-clearance interventions within scope of practice.
- Assist with suctioning procedures where trained, authorized, and clinically indicated.
- Monitor secretion characteristics and report significant changes to the medical/nursing team.
- Educate caregivers regarding appropriate airway-clearance and respiratory-care practices where applicable.

E. Stroke & Neurological Rehabilitation





- Provide respiratory rehabilitation for patients with stroke and neurological disorders.
- Assess the impact of neurological impairment on breathing, cough, airway protection, and respiratory function.
- Work closely with the Speech & Swallow Therapist for patients with dysphagia and aspiration risk.
- Coordinate with physiotherapists for positioning, mobilization, chest physiotherapy, and respiratory conditioning.
- Support patients with reduced mobility who are at increased risk of respiratory complications.

F. Prevention & Management of Respiratory Complications

- Identify patients at risk of respiratory complications due to immobility, neurological impairment, poor cough, aspiration, or prolonged bed rest.
- Implement preventive respiratory-care measures as appropriate.
- Monitor for signs of respiratory infection, aspiration, atelectasis, secretion retention, or respiratory deterioration.
- Escalate significant clinical changes immediately to the treating physician and nursing team.
- Support appropriate infection-prevention and control practices.

G. Equipment Management

- Ensure respiratory therapy equipment is clean, functional, and appropriately maintained.
- Follow equipment cleaning, disinfection, and infection-control procedures.
- Maintain records related to respiratory equipment and consumables where required.
- Report equipment malfunction or safety concerns promptly.
- Coordinate with biomedical/maintenance teams for servicing and repairs.

H. Patient & Caregiver Education

- Educate patients and caregivers regarding respiratory exercises, breathing techniques, airway clearance, and appropriate positioning.
- Explain oxygen safety and respiratory-care precautions where applicable.
- Provide guidance on home respiratory-care requirements during discharge planning.
- Encourage caregiver participation in the patient's respiratory rehabilitation program.

I. Multidisciplinary Team Coordination

- Work closely with doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, speech and swallow therapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, and other rehabilitation professionals.
- Participate in multidisciplinary patient review meetings.
- Share respiratory assessment findings and progress with the treating team.
- Coordinate respiratory goals with the overall rehabilitation plan.
- Assist in discharge planning and continuity of respiratory care where required.

J. Documentation & Reporting

- Maintain accurate and timely respiratory assessment and therapy records.
- Document treatment provided, patient response, clinical observations, and progress.
- Record relevant respiratory parameters and monitoring results.
- Maintain appropriate records of oxygen therapy and respiratory support as required.
- Prepare periodic progress reports for the clinical team.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of patient information.

3. Qualifications

Essential:





- Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy / Respiratory Care Technology or an equivalent recognized qualification.
- Appropriate professional registration/certification as applicable.
- 3 years of relevant clinical experience.

Preferred:

- Experience in hospital, ICU, pulmonary rehabilitation, neurological rehabilitation, or long-term care.
- Experience with stroke and neurological patients.
- Experience with oxygen therapy, airway clearance, suctioning, and non-invasive ventilation.
- Experience working with dependent or bed-ridden patients.

Working Environment The Respiratory Therapist will be based at SENSE Health Advance Rehabilitation Center, Kalyan Nagar, Bengaluru, working primarily with patients undergoing neurological and rehabilitation care. The position requires close coordination with the Medical, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Speech & Swallow, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics, and other rehabilitation teams.

The therapist may be required to work with patients who have significant mobility limitations, impaired cough, secretion-management difficulties, swallowing-related aspiration risk, and other respiratory-care needs.
