– ANAESTHESIA TECHNICIAN
Key Responsibilities
A. Pre-Operative Preparation
- Prepare the anaesthesia workstation, trolley, equipment, and required consumables before every procedure.
- Check the anaesthesia machine, ventilator, oxygen supply, medical gas supply, suction apparatus, monitors, breathing circuits, and related equipment.
- Ensure availability of airway devices such as masks, laryngoscopes, endotracheal tubes, LMAs, stylets, bougies, and other required items.
- Arrange anaesthesia drugs, emergency medications, IV fluids, syringes, IV sets, and other supplies as instructed by the Anaesthesiologist.
- Check emergency airway equipment, crash cart, defibrillator, suction, and oxygen availability.
- Ensure all equipment is clean, functional, and ready before the patient enters the OT.
- Report any equipment malfunction, shortage, or abnormality immediately to the concerned authority.
B. Intra-Operative Responsibilities
- Assist the Anaesthesiologist during induction, maintenance, and recovery from anaesthesia as directed.
- Assist with airway management by providing the required equipment and supplies.
- Assist in connecting and maintaining patient monitoring equipment such as ECG, SpO₂, NIBP, temperature, and other monitors as required.
- Ensure required anaesthesia equipment and consumables remain readily available throughout the procedure.
- Assist in patient positioning and safe transfer as instructed by the clinical team.
- Remain alert to equipment problems or shortages and immediately inform the Anaesthesiologist.
- Provide technical assistance during emergencies and resuscitation procedures as directed.
C. Post-Operative Responsibilities
- Assist in protected transfer of the patient from OT to the recovery area as instructed.
- Ensure anaesthesia equipment is cleaned, disinfected, replenished, and properly stored after each case.
- Dispose of waste according to biomedical waste segregation protocols.
- Check and replenish the anaesthesia trolley and emergency supplies after every procedure.
- Ensure the OT is ready for the next scheduled case.
D. Equipment Maintenance
- Perform daily checks of anaesthesia machines, monitors, ventilators, suction equipment, and other related equipment.
- Maintain equipment checklists and maintenance records.
- Coordinate with the Biomedical Engineering/maintenance team for preventive maintenance and repairs.
- Immediately report defective or unsafe equipment and ensure it is not used until cleared.
- Monitor availability and functionality of oxygen and other medical-gas systems.
- Maintain proper handling and storage of anaesthesia equipment.
E. Stock & Inventory Management
- Maintain adequate stock of anaesthesia consumables, airway devices, circuits, syringes, IV sets, emergency supplies, and other required items.
- Check expiry dates and storage conditions of supplies and medications as applicable.
- Maintain stock registers and usage records as required.
- Inform the OT In-charge before critical items reach minimum stock level.
- Avoid unnecessary wastage and ensure proper utilisation of hospital supplies.
- Assist in periodic stock verification and inventory audits.
F. Infection Control & Sterilisation
- Strictly follow hand hygiene and PPE protocols.
- Follow hospital infection-control and aseptic techniques.
- Ensure reusable anaesthesia equipment is appropriately cleaned, disinfected, or sterilised according to hospital protocol.
- Maintain cleanliness of anaesthesia workstations, trolleys, equipment, and surrounding areas.
- Follow biomedical waste segregation and disposal procedures.
- Participate in infection-control training and audits.
G. Emergency Responsibilities
- Maintain readiness of the emergency airway trolley and crash cart.
- Ensure emergency oxygen, suction, defibrillator, airway equipment, and other required supplies are available.
- Assist the Anaesthesiologist during CPR, resuscitation, difficult-airway situations, and other emergencies as directed.
- Respond promptly to emergency OT requirements.
- Participate in mock drills and emergency preparedness programmes.
H. Documentation & Records
- Maintain daily anaesthesia equipment checklists.
- Maintain equipment maintenance and service records.
- Maintain stock and consumable records.
- Complete required OT/anaesthesia documentation accurately.
- Report incidents, equipment failures, shortages, and near misses as per hospital policy.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and secure handling of hospital records.
I. Coordination & Teamwork
- Coordinate effectively with Anaesthesiologists, ENT Surgeons, nurses, OT technicians, CSSD, pharmacy, biomedical engineering, and other departments.
- Ensure all required equipment and supplies are ready before each scheduled surgery.
- Communicate any delay, shortage, equipment failure, or safety concern immediately.
- Maintain professional and respectful communication with patients and staff.
- Assist the OT team in maintaining smooth workflow during busy surgical schedules.
3. ENT OT-Specific Responsibilities
- Be familiar with equipment and requirements for common ENT procedures.
- Ensure appropriate anaesthesia and airway equipment is available for ENT surgeries.
- Prepare equipment required for procedures involving airway, ear, nose, throat, and head-and-neck surgeries as instructed.
- Ensure suction, cautery, microscope-related requirements, and other procedure-specific equipment are coordinated with the OT team.
- Give special attention to airway safety during ENT procedures.
- Ensure emergency airway equipment is immediately accessible during procedures involving the upper airway.
4. Quality & Patient Safety
- Follow hospital SOPs, clinical protocols, infection-control policies, and quality standards.
- Maintain strict patient identification and safety practices.
- Verify equipment readiness before every procedure.
- Never use defective, expired, or unverified equipment or supplies.
- Participate in departmental audits, quality-improvement activities, training programmes, and competency assessments.
- Immediately report patient-safety incidents and near misses.
5. Qualifications
- Diploma / B.Sc. in Anaesthesia Technology, Anaesthesia & Operation Theatre Technology, or equivalent recognised qualification.
- Relevant experience in an Operation Theatre/Anaesthesia Department is preferred.
- Experience in ENT OT procedures will be an advantage.
Current hospital postings commonly specify Diploma/B.Sc. in Anaesthesia Technology or equivalent, with relevant OT experience preferred.

Pay: ₹10,000.00 - ₹20,000.00 per month
