Integration Architect & Specialist
Role Purpose The Integration Architect & Specialist will be responsible for designing, governing and enabling enterprise integration architectures that seamlessly connect applications, platforms, data, APIs and external ecosystems.
The role will define and implement scalable, secure, resilient and reusable integration patterns across legacy and modern technology environments, enabling real-time and batch integration, API-led connectivity, event-driven architecture and seamless business-process orchestration.
The role will work closely with Enterprise Architecture, Application, Data, Cloud, Cybersecurity, Product and Engineering teams to ensure consistent and robust integration across the enterprise.
Key Responsibilities
1. Enterprise Integration Architecture
Design end-to-end integration architectures across enterprise applications, platforms, data and external systems. Define integration strategies and architecture patterns across legacy, on-premise, cloud and SaaS environments. Design synchronous and asynchronous integration solutions.
Define reusable integration patterns, standards and reference architectures.
Ensure integration architectures are scalable, resilient, secure and cost-effective.
Identify opportunities to simplify fragmented integration landscapes and reduce point-to-point integrations.
1. API Architecture & Management
Design and govern API-led integration architectures. Define API standards, design principles, lifecycle management and governance. Design RESTful and, where appropriate, GraphQL APIs.
Define API security, authentication, authorisation, throttling and versioning.
Establish API reuse and discoverability across the enterprise.
Support API productisation and external ecosystem integrations.
- Define API gateway and management architecture.
1. Event-Driven Architecture
Design event-driven and real-time integration architectures. Define enterprise event models and event-driven integration patterns. Design solutions using event streaming and messaging platforms such as Kafka or equivalent technologies.
Establish appropriate patterns for
Event publishing
Event consumption
Event orchestration
Event routing
Message transformation
Retry and failure handling
- Design architectures capable of supporting high-volume, low-latency transactions.
1. Integration Platforms & Middleware
Architect and evaluate enterprise integration platforms and middleware. Work with technologies such as:
API Management
Enterprise Service Bus
Integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS)
Message brokers
Event streaming platforms
API gateways
Workflow/orchestration platforms
Define appropriate technology choices based on business and technical requirements.
- Drive standardisation and rationalisation of integration technologies.
1. Application & System Integration
Design integration across: Core Applications Digital Channels CRM ERP Data Platforms AI Platforms Partner Ecosystems
Responsibilities include
Application-to-application integration
System-to-system integration
Legacy modernisation
SaaS integration
Cloud integration
Partner/B2B integration
External API integration
Database and data integration
- File-based integration where required
1. Cloud & Hybrid Integration
Design integration architectures spanning on-premise, private cloud and public cloud. Define hybrid integration patterns. Support cloud migration and application modernisation programmes.
Ensure secure connectivity between enterprise environments and cloud platforms.
- Design for scalability, availability, disaster recovery and business continuity.
1. Integration Security
Incorporate security into integration architecture by design. Define authentication and authorisation mechanisms such as: OAuth 2.0
OpenID Connect
Mutual TLS
JWT
API keys where appropriate
Ensure encryption in transit and appropriate protection of sensitive data.
Design secure external and partner integrations.
Work with Cybersecurity and Risk teams to ensure compliance with enterprise security standards.
1. Integration Reliability & Resilience
Design integrations with appropriate:
Retry mechanisms
Circuit breakers
Timeouts
Idempotency
Error handling
Dead-letter queues
Failure recovery
Transaction management
Ensure integrations meet defined availability, performance and resilience requirements.
- Establish observability and monitoring for integration services.
1. Integration Governance
Define and maintain enterprise integration standards and principles. Review solution designs and ensure compliance with approved architecture. Maintain integration reference architectures and design patterns.
Conduct architecture reviews for major integration initiatives.
Identify and manage integration technical debt.
Ensure consistency across integration implementations.
1. DevSecOps & Integration Engineering
Enable automated deployment and lifecycle management of integration components. Support CI/CD for APIs, integration services and event streams. Establish appropriate testing strategies, including:
API testing
Contract testing
Integration testing
