- Evaluate patients by reviewing medical history, observing daily tasks, and assessing physical or cognitive needs.
- Develop treatment plans with specific activities and exercises to help clients reach personal independence goals.
- Recommend adaptive equipment such as wheelchairs, dressing aids, or modified utensils.
- Assess environments at homes, schools, or workplaces to suggest helpful accessibility adjustments.
- Educate families and caregivers on how to safely accommodate and care for the patient.
- Track and document progress, adjusting treatment strategies as needed.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Education: A master’s or doctoral degree in occupational therapy from an accredited program.
- Certification: Passing the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam.
- Licensure: Valid state or regional license to practice.
- Skills: Solid empathy, active communication, problem-solving abilities, and collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
