JOB SUMMARY The General Manager Machining is responsible for leading the complete machining function, including CNC operations, fabrication activities, production planning, capacity utilization, budgeting, process optimization, quality delivery, manpower productivity, and operational excellence. The role is accountable for achieving production targets, cost objectives, machine availability, delivery commitments, safety standards, and continuous improvement initiatives across machining operations. The position requires strong decision-making authority, cross-functional coordination, budget ownership, and leadership of teams to support business growth and customer requirements.
KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead the overall machining department and ensure achievement of production, quality, cost, delivery, safety, and productivity targets.
Develop and implement machining strategies aligned with organizational goals, customer demand, capacity plans, and business growth targets.
¢ Monitor daily, weekly, and monthly performance against approved plans, budgets, schedules, and key operating indicators.
¢ Drive operational excellence through productivity improvement, cycle-time reduction, downtime control, rejection reduction, and resource optimization.
¢ Coordinate with Production, Quality, Maintenance, Purchase, Stores, Design, R&D;, Finance, and customer-facing teams to ensure smooth execution of machining requirements.
¢ Exercise decision-making authority for shop-floor priorities, resource allocation, manpower deployment, machine loading, cost-control initiatives, and process improvements within approved limits.
CNC OPERATIONS RESPONSIBILITIES
¢ Oversee CNC turning, CNC milling, VMC, HMC, grinding, drilling, tapping, boring, and other machining operations as applicable to the organization.
¢ Ensure effective machine loading, tool selection, fixture readiness, program validation, cycle-time optimization, and first-piece approval processes.
¢ Review CNC programming, process sheets, route cards, work instructions, and setup standards to ensure accuracy, repeatability, and productivity.
¢ Monitor machine utilization, OEE, spindle running hours, downtime reasons, setup time, tool consumption, and operator efficiency.
¢ Drive reduction in machining defects, rework, scrap, tool breakage, idle time, and non-productive activities through root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
¢ Ensure preventive maintenance coordination for CNC machines, fixtures, tooling, gauges, and critical equipment to minimize unplanned breakdowns.
¢ Implement best practices for 5S, lean machining, standard setup procedures, tool life monitoring, process capability, and visual management on the shop floor.
FABRICATION RESPONSIBILITIES
¢ Lead fabrication-related activities including cutting, welding, bending, forming, assembly support, finishing, and job-work coordination where applicable.
¢ Ensure fabrication processes meet approved drawings, technical specifications, dimensional tolerances, welding standards, safety requirements, and quality norms.
¢ Plan fabrication jobs based on material availability, equipment capacity, manpower, fixtures, process flow, and delivery schedules.
¢ Coordinate with design, quality, purchase, stores, and production teams for drawing clarifications, material planning, vendor support, inspection, and dispatch readiness.
¢ Control fabrication rework, material wastage, welding defects, dimensional variation, process delays, and subcontracting costs.
¢ Ensure safe handling of fabrication equipment, welding machines, gas cutting tools, cranes, fixtures, jigs, and material movement systems.
BUDGETING RESPONSIBILITIES
¢ Prepare and manage the annual machining department budget covering manpower, consumables, tooling, fixtures, maintenance, repairs, job work, capital expenditure, and operational overheads.
¢ Monitor monthly budget utilization, cost variances, cost per component, tool cost per job, machine-hour cost, overtime cost, scrap cost, and rework cost.
¢ Identify cost-reduction opportunities through productivity improvement, tool-life enhancement, process optimization, energy savings, better vendor management, and waste reduction.
¢ Support capital investment proposals for new CNC machines, automation, fixtures, inspection systems, software, and facility improvements with ROI justification.
¢ Work closely with Finance and Plant Leadership to prepare forecasts, budgets, cost-control dashboards, and performance reviews.
PLANNING RESPONSIBILITIES
¢ Develop daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly machining plans based on customer orders, production schedules, manpower availability, machine capacity, material readiness, and delivery priorities.
¢ Ensure effective capacity planning, machine scheduling, routing, dispatch planning, job sequencing, and manpower allocation to meet committed timelines.
¢ Review load-versus-capacity analysis and recommend corrective action for bottlenecks, overtime needs, outsourcing requirements, or additional resource planning.
¢ Track plan adherence, production shortfalls, delayed jobs, urgent requirements, and customer-priority orders with timely escalation and recovery plans.
¢ Coordinate with Purchase, Stores, Quality, Design, Maintenance, and Production Planning teams to ensure availability of raw materials, tools, fixtures, gauges, drawings, and inspection support.
OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
¢ Ensure smooth execution of machining operations while maintaining defined standards for safety, quality, productivity, cost, and delivery.
¢ Establish standard operating procedures, work instructions, inspection checkpoints, escalation matrices, shift handover practices, and shop-floor control systems.
¢ Conduct daily production reviews and ensure timely corrective action for deviations in output, quality, downtime, manpower productivity, and dispatch commitments.
¢ Lead continuous improvement projects using lean manufacturing, Kaizen, 5S, Poka-Yoke, root-cause analysis, and value-stream improvement methods.
¢ Ensure proper maintenance of production records, machine logs, tool records, inspection reports, downtime reports, job cards, and MIS reports.
STRATEGIC PLANNING AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
¢ Support senior leadership in developing machining capacity expansion plans, automation roadmaps, technology upgrades, and cost-competitiveness strategies.
¢ Evaluate recent product requirements, manufacturing feasibility, process capability, capacity requirements, and investment needs for business growth.
¢ Contribute to customer audits, technical discussions, feasibility reviews, cost estimation, process finalization, and new project implementation.
¢ Identify opportunities to improve machining throughput, expand production capability, improve customer delivery performance, and support revenue growth targets.
TEAM LEADERSHIP AND PEOPLE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
¢ Lead, mentor, and develop supervisors, engineers, programmers, operators, fabricators, technicians, and support staff within the machining department.
¢ Define roles, responsibilities, shift plans, performance expectations, skill matrices, training needs, and succession plans for the team.
¢ Conduct performance reviews, identify skill gaps, improve operator productivity, and build a culture of accountability, discipline, safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
¢ Promote effective communication between shop-floor teams, planning teams, maintenance teams, quality teams, and senior management.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
¢ Own machining cost performance and ensure achievement of budgeted cost, productivity, utilization, scrap, and efficiency targets.
¢ Approve or recommend expenses related to tooling, consumables, repairs, overtime, job work, fixtures, and equipment improvements as per delegation of authority.
¢ Analyze cost trends and implement corrective actions to improve profitability and operational efficiency.
COMPLIANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
¢ Ensure compliance with statutory, safety, environmental, quality, customer, and internal audit requirements applicable to machining and fabrication operations.
¢ Maintain adherence to ISO, IATF, AS9100, or other relevant quality systems as applicable to the organization.
¢ Identify operational risks related to machine breakdowns, capacity constraints, quality failures, safety hazards, manpower shortages, vendor delays, and cost overruns.
¢ Implement risk mitigation plans, preventive actions, safety controls, and documented corrective action systems.
STAKEHOLDER MANAGEMENT
¢ Work closely with Plant Head, Operations Head, Finance, Purchase, Stores, Quality, Maintenance,
Design, R&D;, HR, and customer-facing teams.
¢ Represent the machining department in management reviews, customer audits, vendor discussions, project meetings, and operational performance reviews.
¢ Provide accurate MIS, dashboards, escalation updates, production forecasts, and cost reports to senior leadership.
DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY
¢ Approve daily production priorities, machine allocation, manpower deployment, shift planning, and recovery plans within operational requirements.
¢ Recommend capital expenditure, manpower additions, outsourcing, process changes, technology upgrades, and cost-reduction initiatives.
¢ Authorize corrective and preventive actions for machining defects, process deviations, downtime issues, and safety concerns.
¢ Escalate high-value budget deviations, major breakdowns, customer-impacting delays, and strategic investment requirements to senior management.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
¢ Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
¢ Postgraduate qualification in Operations Management, Manufacturing Management, or Business Administration will be an added advantage.
¢ Certifications in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, CNC Programming, Project Management, Quality Management Systems, or Safety Management are preferred.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
¢ 15+ years of relevant experience in machining, CNC operations, fabrication, manufacturing operations, or plant operations.
¢ Minimum 5+ years of experience in a senior leadership role managing machining operations, production teams, budgets, planning, and cross-functional coordination.
¢ Strong exposure to CNC machines, fabrication processes, tooling, fixtures, machine maintenance coordination, production planning, cost control, and quality systems.
¢ Experience in medium-to-large manufacturing organizations is preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
¢ Strong technical knowledge of machining processes, CNC programming concepts, fabrication methods, tooling, fixtures, gauges, drawings, tolerances, and GD&T.;
¢ Excellent production planning, capacity planning, budgeting, cost-control, and resource-management capability.
¢ Strong leadership, people management, decision-making, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills.
¢ Working knowledge of ERP/MRP systems, production MIS, OEE tracking, quality documentation, and manufacturing dashboards.
¢ Ability to drive lean manufacturing, Kaizen, 5S, root-cause analysis, process improvement, and productivity enhancement initiatives.
¢ Strong communication and review-meeting skills with the ability to present data-driven insights to senior management.

WORKING CONDITIONS
¢ Factory and shop-floor based role with regular interaction across production, fabrication, quality, maintenance, stores, and office teams.
¢ May require shift reviews, extended working hours, emergency breakdown support, customer audit participation, and periodic travel as per business needs.
¢ Must comply with all safety requirements including PPE, machine safety protocols, material handling rules, and site-specific operating procedures.
