Lead Ayurvedic Scientist / Formulation Scientist

Position: Lead Ayurvedic Scientist / Formulation Scientist Department: Research & Development (R&D;) / Product Development

Qualification: BAMS / MD in Ayurveda / M.Pharma in Ayurveda

Experience: 5–10+ years in Ayurvedic formulation, product development, or R&D;

Reporting To: Head – R&D; / Director / Management

1. Job Purpose

We are looking for an experienced Lead Ayurvedic Scientist / Formulation Scientist to lead the development, formulation, optimization, testing, and documentation of innovative Ayurvedic and herbal products. The candidate will be responsible for converting Ayurvedic concepts and classical references into safe, effective, stable, scalable, commercially viable, and regulatory-compliant formulations, while maintaining the principles of Ayurveda.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Ayurvedic Formulation & Product Development

* Lead the development of new Ayurvedic, herbal, nutraceutical, and wellness formulations.

- Develop formulations based on classical Ayurvedic texts, modern scientific research, market requirements, and product objectives.
- Select appropriate herbs, extracts, minerals, and other permitted ingredients based on their therapeutic properties and intended use.
- Develop and optimize formulations in various dosage forms such as:
- Tablets
- Capsules
- Powders / Churna
- Syrups / Liquids
- Oils
- Creams / Ointments
- Gels
- Granules
- Other Ayurvedic dosage forms as required.
- Conduct formulation trials, optimization, and scale-up activities.
- Evaluate the compatibility, stability, dosage, efficacy, and safety of ingredients.

B. Research & Scientific Evaluation

* Conduct literature reviews and scientific research related to Ayurvedic herbs, formulations, ingredients, and therapeutic applications.
- Review classical Ayurvedic references and published scientific literature.
- Evaluate scientific evidence supporting proposed formulations and ingredients.
- Identify opportunities for innovation and improvement of existing products.
- Maintain proper scientific records and formulation development reports.

C. Quality & Standardization

* Establish appropriate specifications for raw materials and finished products in coordination with the Quality Control team.
- Work on standardization of herbal ingredients and formulations.
- Coordinate with QC/QA teams for testing, stability studies, analytical methods, and quality parameters.
- Investigate formulation-related quality issues and recommend corrective actions.
- Ensure consistency of formulations during scale-up and commercial production.

Regulatory & Documentation

* Ensure formulations and product development activities comply with applicable Ayurvedic drug, AYUSH, GMP, and other relevant regulatory requirements.

- Prepare and review technical documents required for product registration, licensing, and regulatory submissions.
- Maintain formulation records, development reports, specifications, master formulas, trial reports, and technical documentation.
- Coordinate with Regulatory Affairs, QA, QC, Production, and other departments for product approvals and commercialization.

E. Pilot & Commercial Scale-Up

* Coordinate pilot batches and technology-transfer activities.
- Work closely with the Production team during scale-up and commercial manufacturing.
- Identify and resolve formulation or process-related issues during manufacturing.
- Ensure that the final commercial formulation remains consistent with the approved R&D; formulation.

F. Team Leadership

* Lead and mentor junior formulation scientists, Ayurvedic experts, research associates, and R&D; personnel.
- Plan and monitor formulation development projects and timelines.
- Review technical work and ensure proper documentation by the R&D; team.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams including QA, QC, Production, Procurement, Regulatory Affairs, and Marketing.

G. Product Innovation

* Identify new product opportunities based on Ayurvedic principles, scientific research, consumer requirements, and market trends.
- Support the development of differentiated and innovative Ayurvedic products.
- Provide scientific and technical inputs to the Marketing and Business Development teams.
- Support product claims with appropriate scientific and regulatory justification.

3. Required Qualifications

Essential:

- BAMS with relevant industry/R&D; experience; or
- MD in Ayurveda; or
- M.Pharma in Ayurveda / Ayurvedic Pharmacy / relevant pharmaceutical discipline.

Preferred:

- Additional experience in Ayurvedic formulation development, herbal products, nutraceuticals, or pharmaceutical R&D.;
- Knowledge of Ayurvedic classical texts and formulation principles.
- Experience with regulatory documentation and AYUSH requirements.

4. Required Experience





* 5–10+ years of relevant experience in Ayurvedic formulation, herbal product development, pharmaceutical R&D;, or a related field.

- Experience in handling the complete product-development cycle from concept → formulation → trials → optimization → scale-up → commercialization will be preferred.
- Candidates with prior experience in leading an R&D;/formulation team will be preferred.
