About the Role

Girafe is looking for an experienced Java AI Developer who can combine strong backend engineering expertise with practical experience in Artificial Intelligence, Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs).

The ideal candidate should have a solid foundation in Java and Spring Boot and should be capable of building scalable backend applications, APIs and microservices while integrating modern AI capabilities into business applications.

This is a hands-on development role for someone who understands both enterprise Java development and the practical implementation of AI-powered features.

Key Responsibilities

- Design, develop and maintain scalable backend applications using Java and Spring Boot.
- Build robust REST APIs, microservices and backend services for web and AI-powered applications.
- Integrate Generative AI and LLM capabilities into existing and new applications.
- Work with LLM APIs such as OpenAI, Gemini, Claude or similar models.
- Develop AI-powered features such as intelligent assistants, chatbots, content generation, document processing, summarisation and automated workflows.
- Build and implement RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) solutions using relevant business and knowledge data.
- Work with embeddings, vector databases, semantic search, and document retrieval.
- Integrate AI models with Java applications through APIs, SDKs and AI frameworks.
- Develop effective prompt engineering approaches and evaluate the quality and reliability of AI-generated responses.
- Work with frameworks/libraries such as Spring AI, LangChain4j or equivalent AI integration frameworks.
- Develop and maintain microservices and event-driven systems.
- Work with databases including MySQL/PostgreSQL and NoSQL databases such as MongoDB.
- Work with messaging technologies such as Kafka or RabbitMQ where required.
- Write clean, maintainable, reusable and production-ready code.
- Conduct code reviews, debugging, testing and performance optimisation.
- Collaborate with product, design, frontend, QA and other engineering teams to convert business requirements into technical solutions.
- Identify opportunities to use AI and automation to improve existing products, internal processes and customer-facing applications.
- Stay updated with developments in Generative AI, LLMs, AI agents, RAG,



vector databases and AI engineering practices.

Required Technical SkillsCore Java Development

- 4+ years of professional software development experience.
- Strong knowledge of Java 8+, preferably Java 17/21.
- Strong experience with Spring Boot.
- Good understanding of Spring Framework, REST APIs and Microservices Architecture.
- Strong knowledge of OOP, design patterns, exception handling and multithreading.
- Experience with Git and standard software development practices.

AI / Generative AI The candidate should have practical exposure to one or more of the following:

- Generative AI / LLM application development.
- OpenAI, Gemini, Claude or other LLM APIs.
- RAG pipelines.
- Prompt engineering.
- Embeddings and semantic search.
- Vector databases such as Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, Milvus, Chroma or pgvector.
- AI-powered chatbots or virtual assistants.
- Document intelligence / document Q&A.;
- AI agents and workflow automation.
- Function/tool calling.
- Model evaluation and response optimisation.
- Spring AI, LangChain4j, LangChain or similar frameworks.

Database & Backend

- Robust SQL knowledge.
- Experience with MySQL/PostgreSQL or similar relational databases.
- Knowledge of MongoDB or another NoSQL database is preferred.
- Understanding of API authentication, security and integration.
- Exposure to Kafka/RabbitMQ is an advantage.

Cloud & DevOps – Preferred

- Exposure to AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.
- Understanding of Docker and containerisation.
- Basic understanding of CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience deploying and monitoring backend/AI applications in production.

Good to Have

- Experience building AI-powered SaaS products.
- Experience with AI agents and autonomous workflows.
- Experience integrating AI into existing enterprise applications.
- Knowledge of Python for AI/ML integrations.
- Experience with OpenAI-compatible APIs.
- Experience with vector databases and semantic search.
- Understanding of model costs, latency, token usage and AI application optimisation.
- Experience working with cloud-based AI services.
- Experience in product/startup environments where the candidate has owned features from development to deployment.

Education





- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or a related technical field.
- Relevant professional experience and demonstrable project experience may be considered.

- Has actually integrated LLM/GenAI capabilities into applications, rather than only having theoretical AI knowledge.
- Understands how to build APIs and backend systems that interact with AI models.
- Has practical knowledge of RAG, embeddings, vector databases and prompt engineering.
- Can independently troubleshoot technical problems and take ownership of development tasks.
- Is comfortable learning new AI frameworks and technologies quickly.
- Understands software quality, scalability, security and production deployment.
- Can work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
