Role purpose
Build financial models, compare financial and operational data, analyse trends and identify cost improvements across a multi-entity healthcare and recruitment group. Give leaders evidence to understand performance, challenge spending and assess the financial impact of business decisions.
Work closely with the Group Finance Director, Financial Controller and operational leaders, using accounts and source data supplied by the finance team. This is an analytical role; management accounts production, bookkeeping and the accounting close sit with the accounting team.
Key responsibilities
Data comparison and trend analysis
Compare performance across companies, services, locations and time periods, covering revenue, margins, staffing costs, overheads and operational activity.
Analyse monthly, quarterly and annual trends against budgets, forecasts and prior periods. Separate volume, pricing, cost and service-mix effects, and identify emerging risks and opportunities.
Create fair comparisons using consistent definitions, cost allocations and measures such as cost per care hour or occupied place. Validate datasets against finance records and investigate anomalies with the relevant teams.
Present analytical findings through explicit dashboards, charts and commentary. Explain what has changed, why it matters and what action is recommended.
Financial modelling and scenario analysis
Build and maintain financial models for budgets, forecasts and commercial decisions. Document assumptions, test model accuracy and challenge inputs with finance and operational colleagues.
Model the relationship between placements, occupancy, care hours, fee rates, staffing, pay costs and profitability. Calculate break-even levels and the financial effect of changing key drivers.
Run what-if and sensitivity analysis on service growth, mobilisation, wage increases, fee changes and staffing options. Quantify the impact on profit and cash under different scenarios.
Profitability analysis and commercial comparisons
Analyse profitability by entity, service, site, placement and contract where data allows. Identify margin leakage and distinguish direct contribution from profit after allocated overheads.
Track healthcare measures including occupancy, commissioned and delivered care hours, staffing ratios, overtime, agency usage, cost per care hour and contribution per placement.
Assess recruitment performance through billable hours, pay and charge rates,
gross profit per hour and consultant productivity, where relevant.
Support fee reviews, contract pricing and tender decisions through cost models, sensitivity analysis and break-even calculations.
Evaluate new services, property-related operating commitments and capital expenditure through business cases covering mobilisation costs, cash requirements, expected returns and payback.
Support acquisition appraisal and post-acquisition tracking, including performance against the approved business case and integration savings.
Compare operational options and explain the financial trade-offs to leaders. Turn findings into practical recommendations, taking account of safe staffing and service quality.
Cash flow and working capital analysis
Model cash requirements and analyse cash flow trends using inputs from treasury, payroll, credit control and accounts payable. Assess the cash implications of growth, cost changes and investment decisions.
Analyse debtor days, overdue balances, unbilled income and billing delays. Quantify the cash impact and help teams prioritise corrective action.
Explain differences between profit and cash, including working capital movements, capital expenditure and other material cash commitments.
Cost control and analytical improvement
Analyse overheads, headcount, procurement and recurring expenditure by entity and supplier. Compare unit costs, investigate spending trends and identify duplication, overspending and sustainable savings.
Model cost-saving options, including implementation costs and payback. Track realised savings against the agreed baseline, separating one-off benefits from recurring savings.
Develop reliable dashboards and automate repeat reporting using Excel, Power Query and business intelligence tools where appropriate.
Improve data consistency across finance, payroll and operational systems. Document assumptions, source data, calculation logic and version control.
Handle financial, employee and service-user information confidentially and use only the level of detail needed for analysis.
Essential
Experience in FP&A;, financial modelling, commercial analysis or a comparable analytical finance role, ideally across multiple entities or business units.
Strong ability to interpret profit and loss, balance sheets and cash flow, and translate financial and operational data into useful commercial analysis.
Advanced Excel skills, including building financial models, sensitivity analysis, data comparison and analysis of large datasets.
Ability to reconcile financial and operational information, spot inconsistencies and maintain a clear audit trail.
Ability to explain financial findings clearly to non-finance colleagues and challenge assumptions professionally.
Strong organisation, attention to detail and ability to deliver accurate work to recurring deadlines.
Studying towards or holding a relevant qualification such as ACCA, CIMA or ACA, or equivalent practical experience.
Desirable
Experience in healthcare, social care, supported living, recruitment or another labour-intensive service business.
Experience with entity benchmarking, unit economics, shared cost allocations and analysis of performance across a group.
Experience using Power BI, Power Query, Xero or comparable accounting and reporting systems.
Exposure to acquisitions, service mobilisation or finance transformation.
Initial priorities
First 30 days: understand the entity structure, cost base, operational drivers and data sources; identify gaps and agree priority analytical questions.
Days 31 to 60: establish entity and service comparisons, build core financial models and complete initial trend and cost analysis.
Days 61 to 90: deliver an analytical dashboard, present quantified cost and margin recommendations, and establish tracking of agreed actions and realised benefits.
Measures of success
Objectives and numerical targets will be agreed with the Group Finance Director. Success will be measured by the accuracy and usability of financial models; quality of comparisons and trend analysis; timely identification of cost and margin issues; adoption of recommendations; and verified financial benefits from agreed actions.
The analyst owns the analytical work and follow-up of recommendations. Operational leaders remain accountable for implementing operational changes, with accounting, payments and collections owned by the relevant finance teams.
