Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Robotics Engineer to lead the design, development, and deployment of robotic and automated systems across engineering and construction projects. This is a senior individual-contributor role for an engineer who has spent at least a decade taking robotic systems from concept through field commissioning, and who is comfortable operating at the intersection of mechanical design, control systems, embedded software, and site execution.

The successful candidate will own the technical direction of robotics initiatives: selecting platforms and architectures, integrating sensing and control hardware, validating performance against safety and reliability requirements, and mentoring a team of engineers and technicians. Equally important is commercial and constructability judgement, since the role is expected to spot where robotics earns its place on an EPC project and where it does not.

Major Responsibilities:

- Lead the full lifecycle design of robotic systems, including kinematic and mechanical concept development, actuator and sensor selection, control architecture definition, and integration with plant and site control systems.
- Define system requirements, interface specifications, and acceptance criteria, and translate them into design documentation, test plans, and commissioning procedures. Integrate robotic platforms with PLC, DCS, SCADA, and industrial network infrastructure, ensuring reliable data exchange and interlock behaviour with the wider control system.

Carry out functional safety and risk assessments in line with applicable machinery and robot safety standards, and specify the protective measures, safety-rated components, and validation evidence required.
- Lead factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, and field commissioning, resolving technical issues under schedule pressure and handing over stable systems to operations.
- Provide technical direction and mentoring to junior and mid-level engineers, review their deliverables, and raise the engineering standard of the team. Evaluate emerging robotics, autonomy, and machine-vision technologies, run pilot studies, and recommend where automation delivers measurable safety, quality, or productivity gains.
- Support proposals and estimates with technical scope definition, equipment selection, and effort and cost inputs for robotics packages.
- Identify use cases across the construction lifecycle where robotic support eases construction and lead the pilots to prove or disprove them.
- Work with engineering, procurement, and construction teams to embed robotic solutions into project execution plans and field work packages.

Education and Experience Requirements:

- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Instrumentation, Control Systems Engineering, or a closely related discipline. A postgraduate qualification in robotics, automation, or control systems is an advantage.
- Minimum 15 years of professional engineering experience in industrial automation, control systems, robotics, or mechatronic system development, including delivery of systems into production or field operation.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

- Demonstrated domain knowledge of oil and gas EPC and construction projects, including engineering, procurement, fabrication, modularization, installation, pre-commissioning, commissioning, start-up, and handover. Strong hands-on capability in industrial automation architecture and integration, including PLC, DCS, SCADA, HMI, safety instrumented or safety PLC systems, variable-frequency drives, motion control, instrumentation, and industrial control panels.
- Practical knowledge of industrial communication and OT integration, including protocols and networks such as Ether Net/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP/RTU, OPC UA, and time-series or historian interfaces, with an understanding of cybersecurity and network segregation requirements. Proven ability to develop automation deliverables such as control philosophies, functional descriptions, I/O lists, cause-and-effect matrices, control narratives, interface specifications, test procedures, and commissioning dossiers.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary system integration, including requirements definition, design reviews, vendor coordination, FAT, SAT, loop checks, field commissioning, troubleshooting, performance validation, and final handover.

Sound knowledge of construction methods, work packaging, temporary works, site logistics, permit-to-work practices, constructability, and the safety, quality, schedule, and productivity drivers that govern deployment on active oil and gas construction sites. Working knowledge of machinery safety, functional safety, hazardous-area requirements, and applicable codes and standards, with the ability to participate in risk assessments and define safeguards, interlocks, validation evidence, and compliance documentation. Ability to identify and qualify automation opportunities, develop technical and commercial business cases, define measurable acceptance criteria, execute field trials, and support adoption at scale.
- Strong technical leadership, stakeholder management, written communication, and mentoring skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, procurement, construction, HSE, commissioning, operations, vendors, and technology partners. Experience with industrial robot platforms such as ABB, FANUC, KUKA, Yaskawa, Universal Robots, or equivalent—including offline programming, end-of-arm tooling, machine vision, calibration, cell integration, and robot safety—is an added advantage.
- Knowledge of autonomous robotic systems—including AMRs, unmanned ground vehicles, or quadruped robots; localisation and navigation; perception and sensor fusion; fleet management; mission planning; remote operations; and integration with site or plant systems—is an added advantage.
