Roles and Responsibilities of an MD General Medicine DoctorRoles

- Diagnose and treat acute and chronic medical conditions in adult patients.
- Provide consultation in the Outpatient Department (OPD).
- Manage patients admitted to the Inpatient Department (IPD).
- Evaluate and stabilize patients presenting with medical emergencies.
- Provide consultation to other departments and participate in multidisciplinary patient care.
- Supervise and guide junior doctors and medical staff, as applicable.
- Participate in clinical teaching, medical training, and research when required.

Responsibilities

- Patient Assessment: Obtain medical history, perform physical examinations, and assess patients' clinical conditions.
- Diagnosis: Order and interpret laboratory tests, ECGs, imaging, and other investigations.
- Treatment Planning: Develop appropriate treatment plans and prescribe medications according to clinical needs.
- Emergency Management: Assess, stabilize, and initiate treatment for critically ill patients; arrange ICU admission or specialist referral when necessary.
- Inpatient Management: Monitor patients' progress, review treatment effectiveness, and modify treatment plans as needed.
- OPD Management: Examine patients, provide prescriptions, offer medical advice, and arrange follow-up visits.
- Patient Safety: Monitor for complications, adverse drug reactions, and medication interactions.




- Medical Documentation: Maintain accurate case sheets, progress notes, prescriptions, investigation reports, and discharge summaries.
- Coordination of Care: Collaborate with nursing staff, other specialists, and allied healthcare professionals.
- Patient Education: Explain diagnoses, treatment options, medication use, lifestyle modifications, and preventive healthcare.
- Infection Control: Follow hospital infection-prevention protocols and antimicrobial stewardship guidelines.
- Discharge Planning: Ensure appropriate discharge instructions, medication reconciliation, follow-up arrangements, and continuity of care.
- Professional Conduct: Maintain patient confidentiality, obtain informed consent where required, and comply with hospital policies and medical ethics.
- Quality Improvement: Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and continuing medical education as applicable.
