About the role
The Ken has published visual stories for five years: reporting told through infographics, with the chart or the illustration doing the work 1,000 words would otherwise do. They are among the most shared things we make, and our signature infographic style is one of the few things readers recognise before they even see our logo.
The next visual stories are interactive. A reader will move through the information rather than read it from top to bottom: choose a path, change a variable, watch a number move, see a picture build itself. That is a different craft from a static graphic, and it needs someone whose instincts are visual first, who thinks in motion as naturally as in layout, and who can work beside reporters, researchers, and product people without losing the thread of the story.
You’ll be that person. Early in your career, with a portfolio that already shows you can make information beautiful and clear, and ready to learn the rest on live stories with real readers.
What you will do
Design the visuals. Infographics, illustrations, and interactive visualisations for each story, in whatever tools you work best in. Start from the reporting, find the one thing the reader must understand, and build the visual around it.
Make it move.
Motion graphics and easy animation that carry the narrative: a transition that explains a change, a build that reveals a structure, a loop that holds attention without distracting from the point.
Set the direction. Vision boards and visual references at the start of each story, so editorial, research, and product agree on the look before anyone builds. Present the direction clearly, take the argument, and iterate.
Build the system. Layouts, components, and visual rules that keep the interactive stories consistent with each other and with The Ken, so the tenth story is faster to make than the first and still looks like us.
Work in the open. Share early, show work in progress, explain a choice in plain words, and change it when the feedback is better.
Check what goes out. Every number in a chart and every label on an illustration is checked against the reporting before it publishes. A beautiful graphic with a wrong figure is a correction waiting to happen.
What we are looking for
Up to two years of design experience, and a completed Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in design or a related field. We care more about what your portfolio shows than how long you’ve worked.
You will do well here if:
– Your portfolio shows storytelling through visuals: a sequence, a chart,
or an animation that makes someone understand something they didn’t before.
– You have a strong sense of typography, colour, layout, composition, and visual flow, and you can say why a piece works.
– You’re fluent in some of Figma, Adobe Illustrator, After Effects, Procreate, Affinity, or Cavalry, and you pick up new tools quickly.
– You notice the detail: the misaligned axis, the label that’s two points too small, the colour that doesn’t mean what it should.
– You write and speak clearly, and you can present an idea to a room of people who aren’t designers.
– You’re curious about AI tools and open to using them in your workflow, for research, ideation, or speeding up production, while the judgment stays yours.
– Useful but not required: data visualisation or editorial and news design; motion work in your portfolio; you read The Ken and have an opinion about our visual stories.
What you get
Your work on stories that thousands of people read and share, from your first month, with your name on it. A visual style with a reputation, to work inside and push forward. Reporters and researchers who bring you the material, and product people who build what you design. Direct, daily feedback from people who have made visual journalism a thing readers come to The Ken for. And the chance, very early in a career, to help define what an interactive story looks like at a publication rather than inherit someone else’s answer.
