About the role

The Ken has a strong brand and a small design team, and both are being asked to do more every year: more formats, more surfaces, more places where a reader, a listener, or a sponsor meets us for the first time. Every one of those needs to look like The Ken, convert when it should, and ship on time.

Right now, routine assets (thumbnails, social cards, sponsor banners) compete for the same hands as the work that actually moves numbers (a landing page that converts, a pitch that closes, a thumbnail that stops a scroll). We want to separate the two: a design system that lets editors, producers, and the social team produce good routine work on their own, and a designer whose time goes to the high-judgment pieces.

That designer is you. The first two or three months go mostly to building the system. After that, most of your time goes to the pages, pitches, and visuals that templates can’t do.

What you will do

Build and own the design system. Turn the brand into a working Figma library: colour and type tokens, logo rules, components, layouts. Build templates for repeatable assets (YouTube thumbnails, social posts, standard sponsor banners) with variable fields at every size we publish in. Make them usable by non-designers without breaking, and work with product to automate filling them where it pays off. Keep the system current and police quality so output doesn’t drift into sameness.

Design the sponsorship collateral. Pitch decks and custom proposals for the people who sell sponsorship. Sponsor banners and placements that respect the sponsor’s brand and our readers’ attention at the same time.

Design the pages that convert.

Campaign, subscription, and product landing pages, built to convert, measured on whether they do, and iterated.

Design the first screens. Onboarding for new readers, listeners, and corporate seats, working from flows defined with the product team. App store screenshot sets and hero visuals that explain the product at a glance.

Art-direct social and video. The first versions of social templates and YouTube thumbnails, the art direction the social and video teams work within, and the standout one-offs that templates don’t cover.

Say no with reasons. Editorial, product, sales, and sponsors all want different things from the same visual language. You hold it together, explain why, and change your mind when the argument is better.

Read the numbers on your own work. Conversion on the pages you design, performance of the formats you art-direct, how often the templates are used and by whom. Report monthly in the open review and let it change what you build next.

What we are looking for

2 to 4 years of professional design experience, with a portfolio that shows both solid visual craft and a habit of building reusable systems. We care more about what you made and who used it than where you worked.

You will do well here if:

– Your portfolio spans brand or marketing assets and digital screens, and the work looks considered rather than templated.
– You have strong typography, layout, and colour judgment, and you can explain a decision in plain words.
– You’re fluent in Figma: components, variants, variables, auto-layout.

– You’ve built at least one template or component set that other people used without you, and you can say what happened.
– You design for conversion: hierarchy, calls to action, a feel for what makes someone click, sign up, or read on.
– You know platform specs cold: YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X sizes; App Store and Google Play screenshot rules; responsive web.
– You see the third thumbnail and think “this should be a template”.
– You ship same-day assets and still sweat the details that matter.
– You read what we publish and let it shape the visuals.
– You seek feedback and act on it. The system will stretch you; we want someone who grows into it.
– Useful but not required: motion or short video graphics; basic HTML/CSS or experience handing off to developers; media, publishing or consumer subscription experience; any work automating design output.

What you get

A rare chance, at 2 to 4 years in, to own a brand’s visual system end to end rather than execute someone else’s. Range most design roles never offer: a sponsor pitch, an app store set, and a founder-interview thumbnail in the same week, with product surfaces, growth design, and print-style craft all in play. Subject matter that rewards thought: making business and technology visually compelling without dumbing it down. Leverage: once the system works, you enable every editor and producer to make better assets. And visible impact: your pages and collateral tie directly to subscriptions and revenue, and you’ll see what your work moves. Our designers describe this as “creative freedom, along with the constant push to think differently and try things”, and “never settling for mundane or generic work”. That’s the job.
