Sports Instructor / Physical Education Teacher — Grades 1–4
Chaphalkar International School (CIS), Sangli
Full-time | On-site
About CIS
Chaphalkar International School is an upcoming school in Sangli built on the belief that every mind has room to become. Our approach combines strong academic foundations with life skills, creativity, physical wellbeing, confidence, and character development.
At CIS, sports are an integral part of education. We want every child to enjoy movement, explore different sports, develop healthy habits, and learn to work with others. We value individual progress, participation, and sportsmanship alongside performance.
About the Role
We are looking for an enthusiastic, responsible, and child-centred Sports Instructor to help establish and deliver the physical education programme for Grades 1–4.
The role involves planning engaging lessons, developing foundational movement and sporting skills, maintaining safe and inclusive participation, and helping children build confidence, independence, and resilience. As part of CIS’s founding team, you will contribute to the school’s sports culture, routines, equipment planning, and programme development.
Key Responsibilities
1. Plan and Deliver Meaningful Sports Lessons
- Develop an age-appropriate annual plan with clear progression across Grades 1–4.
- Plan structured lessons with warm-ups, skill development, games, cool-downs, and brief reflection.
- Build foundational skills such as running, jumping, balancing, throwing, catching, coordination, and spatial awareness.
- Introduce a variety of sports and movement activities suited to children’s readiness, available facilities, and equipment.
- Use playful challenges, demonstrations, and guided practice to help children understand both how and why a skill is used.
- Maximise active participation through small-group activities, stations, and simple games.
2. Include and Encourage Every Child
- Adapt activities for different abilities, confidence levels, and learning or physical needs.
- Create achievable challenges for beginners and suitable extensions for children ready to progress.
- Encourage hesitant children patiently and ensure fair opportunities to participate.
- Recognise effort, improvement, teamwork, and responsible behaviour.
- Use respectful language and positive behaviour guidance, avoiding humiliation, body-based comparisons, or exercise as punishment.
3. Develop Life Skills Through Sports
- Teach cooperation, fair play, turn-taking, respect for rules, and care for equipment.
- Help children learn to win graciously, manage disappointment, resolve disagreements, and try again.
- Encourage decision-making through questions such as, “What helped your team?” and “What could you try differently?”
- Build independence through routines for preparing, using, and returning equipment.
- Develop healthy habits around hydration, hygiene, warm-ups, rest, and physical activity.
4. Maintain Safety and Student Wellbeing
- Check activity spaces and equipment before use and provide active supervision throughout lessons.
- Set clear safety routines and adapt sessions to weather, space, and children’s needs.
- Follow school procedures for medical information, injuries, emergencies, and incident reporting.
- Coordinate with relevant staff and parents regarding individual participation requirements.
- Follow child safeguarding expectations and maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
5. Build and Coordinate the CIS Sports Programme
- Support the planning of equipment requirements, storage, maintenance, and safe use of sports spaces.
- Organise inclusive sports days, house activities, friendly matches, and appropriate competitions.
- Ensure regular lessons develop skills progressively throughout the year, alongside preparation for events.
- Identify children’s interests and strengths and recommend suitable opportunities for further development.
- Coordinate with specialist coaches or external sports partners when required.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers on meaningful links between physical education, health, and classroom learning.
6. Observe Progress and Communicate Clearly
- Maintain simple records of children’s skill development, participation, teamwork, and areas needing support.
- Give specific, encouraging feedback and use observations to plan subsequent lessons.
- Communicate constructively with parents and colleagues about progress and wellbeing.
- Participate in school meetings, cooperative planning, and professional development.
Qualifications and Experience
- B.P.Ed., B.P.E.S., or an equivalent recognised qualification in Physical Education or Sports; M.P.Ed. is an advantage.
- Experience teaching or coaching primary-age children preferred.
- Ability to teach foundational movement skills and introduce multiple sports.
- Understanding of age-appropriate physical development, inclusive teaching, and positive classroom management.
- Clear communication skills in English; knowledge of Marathi or Hindi is an advantage.
- First-aid and CPR certification preferred; willingness to undertake relevant training is essential.
- Strong planning, organisational, and teamwork skills.
- Experience developing a school sports programme or coordinating sports events is an advantage.
Who Will Thrive at CIS
An educator who can make sports enjoyable and purposeful for every child; who combines transparent expectations with patience; and who understands that confidence on the playground can influence confidence in the classroom and beyond.
We welcome someone who is open to feedback, willing to learn, and excited to help build a school where physical education receives thoughtful planning and consistent attention.
