0–5+ Years

Qualification

B.E./B.Tech – ECE / EEE / CSE / E&I; / Related Discipline

Reporting To

Technical Lead / Project Manager

ROLE PURPOSE

The Embedded Systems Engineer will develop, test, debug and integrate embedded software and firmware for VDesign’s defence and communication products. The role requires strong C programming and embedded-system fundamentals, supported by practical knowledge of microcontrollers, hardware interfaces and communication protocols.

Development lifecycle: Requirements → Design → Coding → Hardware Interface → Protocol Implementation → Debugging → Integration → Testing → Documentation → Field / Customer Support

VDesign values depth of fundamentals, problem-solving capability and engineering ownership over superficial knowledge of a large number of technologies.

A. MANDATORY SKILLS

1. C Programming – Solid Knowledge

· Data types, operators, control statements, functions, arrays and strings.

· Structures, unions, enumerations, pointers, pointer arithmetic and function pointers.

· Bitwise operations, preprocessor directives, macros and header/source-file organisation.

· Correct use of static, const, volatile and extern.

· Stack, heap, Data/BSS concepts, endianness, data packing and alignment.

· Ability to independently write, understand, review and debug C programs.

2. Embedded-System Fundamentals

· Microcontroller architecture, GPIO, interrupts, timers/counters, ADC/DAC and PWM.

· Watchdog, Flash/EEPROM, clocks, memory-mapped peripherals and peripheral configuration.

· Basic boot sequence and bootloader concepts.

· Exposure to ARM Cortex-M, STM32, NXP, TI, Microchip or equivalent controllers is preferred.

3. Basic Communication Interfaces

· UART / USART, RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, SPI, I²C, CAN and Ethernet basics.

· Clear understanding of the difference between a physical interface and a communication protocol.

4. Protocol Fundamentals

· Packet/frame structure, header, payload, addressing, CRC/checksum and ACK/NACK.

· Sequence numbers, timeout, retransmission, buffering and error handling.

· Packet loss, throughput and latency.

· Ability to read a protocol specification and implement it in embedded software.

5. Hardware Understanding & Debugging

· Read basic circuit schematics, component datasheets, pin configurations and timing diagrams.

· Understand logic levels and debug hardware/software interface issues.

· Basic familiarity with Digital Multimeter, Oscilloscope, Logic Analyzer, serial terminals and JTAG/SWD debuggers.

B. WORKING KNOWLEDGE

6. C++

· Classes/objects, encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism and constructors/destructors.

· Function overloading, templates, STL, smart pointers and multithreading fundamentals.

· Object-oriented software design.

7. TCP/IP & Network Programming

· TCP, UDP,

IPv4, socket programming and client/server architecture.

· Broadcast, multicast, ARP, ICMP, DHCP and basic network configuration.

· Ability to analyse Ethernet communication using tools such as Wireshark is desirable.

8. Software Development Practices

· Modular architecture, coding standards, code review and version control.

· Unit, integration and regression testing; defect tracking and configuration management.

· Release management. Working knowledge of Git is strongly preferred.

C. ADDED ADVANTAGE

Candidates are not required to know all of the following. Demonstrated competence in one or more areas will be considered an advantage.

9. Embedded Linux

· Linux command line, processes/threads, IPC, socket programming and serial/Ethernet interfaces.

· GCC/G++, Make/CMake, cross compilation, application debugging and shell scripting.

· Yocto, Buildroot and device-driver exposure are additional advantages.

10. RTOS

· FreeRTOS, ThreadX, VxWorks or equivalent.

· Tasks, scheduling, priorities, semaphores, mutexes, queues and event flags.

· Interrupt handling, race conditions, deadlocks, inter-task communication and real-time constraints.

11. Qt / GUI Development

· Qt Creator, C++/Qt, Widgets, Signals & Slots and QML.

· Serial, TCP/UDP communication, multithreaded GUI applications, device configuration, data logging and real-time monitoring.

12. Java

Java is not mandatory for the core embedded role. Knowledge of Java is an advantage for engineering applications, configuration utilities and test software.

13. Specialised Protocols

· CAN / CAN-FD, Modbus, CANopen, USB, SNMP, MQTT, FTP/TFTP and HTTP/REST.

· MIL-STD-1553, ARINC-429 or other mission-system interfaces.

· Custom serial/network protocols.

· The key expectation is the ability to understand a new protocol specification and independently implement and debug it.

D. ENGINEERING RESPONSIBILITIES

· Understand system and software requirements.

· Develop embedded C/C++ software, device drivers and interface software.

· Implement and validate communication protocols.

· Interface firmware with electronic hardware and debug integration issues.

· Perform unit testing, integration testing and communication-packet analysis.

· Conduct systematic root-cause analysis of failures.

· Support system-level integration, configuration management and source-code control.

· Prepare technical documentation and software release records.

· Support production, customer demonstrations, acceptance testing and field trials.

· Resolve field-reported technical issues and support corrective actions.

E.

DOCUMENTATION RESPONSIBILITY

· Software Requirement Specification (SRS).

· Software Design Description.

· Interface Control Document (ICD) and protocol specifications.

· Flowcharts, test procedures and test reports.

· Debugging reports and Root Cause Analysis (RCA).

· Software release notes and configuration records.

F. DEFENCE / MISSION-CRITICAL ENGINEERING

VDesign operates in defence and mission-critical engineering environments. Engineers are expected to maintain high standards in reliability, repeatability, traceability, data integrity, fault handling, configuration control, verification and validation, technical documentation, information security, and product/customer confidentiality.

Knowledge of MISRA C/C++, static analysis or other high-reliability software-development practices will be an advantage.

G. EXPERIENCE-BASED EXPECTATIONS

Level

Expected Capability

Graduate Engineer Trainee
0–1 Year

Strong fundamentals: C programming, microcontroller basics, UART/SPI/I²C, basic electronics, logical problem solving and willingness to learn. Freshers are not expected to know Qt, Linux, RTOS and every protocol.

Embedded Systems Engineer
1–3 Years

Should independently handle C/C++, MCU peripherals, communication protocols, hardware integration, debugging, unit testing and documentation. Exposure to TCP/UDP, RTOS, Linux or Qt is preferred.

Senior Embedded Systems Engineer
3–6+ Years

Should handle system design, software architecture, complex protocol development, RTOS/Linux, hardware/software integration, RCA, design reviews, customer/field support and mentoring. Expected to own a subsystem or product with limited supervision.

H. PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS / KRA

· Quality and reliability of software; schedule adherence and coding discipline.

· First-time-right implementation and defect reduction.

· Debugging and root-cause-analysis capability.

· System integration capability and documentation quality.

· Ownership of assigned work and independent engineering problem solving.

· Production/field issue resolution, technical learning and team collaboration.

· Compliance with configuration-control and confidentiality requirements.

I. IDEAL CANDIDATE

VDesign is looking for a hands-on embedded engineer, not merely a programmer. The candidate should be interested in understanding how the hardware works, how firmware controls it, how information is communicated, how the complete system behaves, and how failures can be identified and corrected.

Candidates who can demonstrate actual embedded projects, development-board experience, protocol implementation, hardware debugging or independently developed firmware/software will be given preference.

Strong fundamentals and demonstrated problem-solving ability will be valued more than the number of technologies listed on the résumé.
