A role built around the gap between promise and delivery

The Board requires a director who can judge whether commercial promises, technology choices and delivery evidence remain aligned as AI changes how work is sold and performed. The seat contributes to Audit, Stakeholders Relationship and CSR deliberations, together with a specialist board forum. It calls for a practitioner who can translate technical and operating uncertainty into decisions about revenue quality, client obligation, investment and trust.

Where the director will enter the discussion

At the front end, major contracts should be reviewed for outcome commitments, acceptance, productivity assumptions, third-party technology, data permissions, liability and transition effort. The appointee will question whether an AI-enabled delivery promise is supported by repeatable capability or by a pilot being projected into an enterprise case.
During delivery, the Board should see more than utilisation and milestone status. Estimate-to-complete movement, defect escape, change requests, client dependency, subcontractor use,



attrition in critical roles and unbilled positions together reveal contract health. Projects that remain “green” while cash, quality or scope deteriorates should trigger a reporting-design challenge.
For financial oversight, the director will probe fixed-price revenue, contract assets, capitalised development, cloud commitments, restructuring charges, acquisition accounting and management overlays. Retrospective review of estimates is essential: repeated optimism is a governance issue even when each individual judgement is defensible.
AI governance will cover use-case inventory, approved data, model and tool provenance, human-review points, evaluation, security, client consent, intellectual-property protection and incident handling. The Board must distinguish internal productivity assistance from systems that affect client output, regulated decisions or personal data.
