SAP S/4HANA IS-Retail Data Migration Lead
Role Purpose
We are seeking an experienced SAP S/4HANA IS-Retail Data Migration Lead to take ownership of end-to-end master data migration for a Greenfield SAP S/4HANA 2023 Private Cloud Edition implementation for a hypermarket retail business.
The role will lead a team of seven data migration resources and coordinate with business data owners, SAP functional leads, technical teams, and the project management team. The primary focus is the migration of retail master data from the legacy Oracle environment into SAP, including Article Master, Merchandise Categories and Hierarchy, Sales Condition Records, Purchasing Info Records, and related master data. The lead will be accountable for migration planning, source data assessment, mapping, cleansing coordination, load execution, reconciliation, issue resolution, cutover readiness, and business sign-off.
This is a hands-on leadership role requiring strong SAP Retail knowledge and the ability to take over an ongoing workstream with minimal disruption.
Role Details – Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
Migration Leadership and Planning
Own the end-to-end master data migration strategy, object inventory, schedule, dependencies, execution tracker, and cutover plan for the SAP S/4HANA IS-Retail implementation.
Lead, allocate, and monitor work for a team of seven migration resources; establish clear ownership, backup coverage, daily progress reviews, and quality checkpoints.
Take over current migration activities by reviewing existing templates, mapping rules, load files, defects, decisions, dependencies, and committed milestones; maintain continuity and avoid unnecessary rework.
Report progress, risks, blockers, data readiness, and decisions required to the SAP Project Manager / Delivery Lead.
SAP IS-Retail Master Data
Lead migration of Single Articles, Generic Articles, Variant Articles, Sales Set Articles, Reference Articles, and Non-Trading Articles, including relevant descriptions, UoMs, barcodes/EANs, classification, purchasing, sales, valuation, logistics, and site-specific views.
Manage Merchandise Category and hierarchy mapping, validation of hierarchy levels, article assignments, and alignment with procurement, assortment, store operations, and reporting requirements.
Coordinate article extensions to stores, distribution centres, plants, and other relevant sites; validate site- specific data and dependencies.
Lead Sales Condition Record migration, including relevant pricing and promotional conditions in scope; validate condition types, key combinations, sales area, article/site/customer combinations where applicable, validity dates, currency, units, and values with the SD/Pricing team.
Lead Purchasing Info Record migration and related purchasing data; validate supplier/article relationships, purchasing organization, plant/site, purchasing group, order unit, planned delivery time, and purchasing conditions.
Coordinate related objects within the approved scope, such as supplier/customer Business Partners, purchase condition records, source lists, storage bins, and other finance or logistics master data.
Support Fresh Business and catch-weight article attributes, POS/e-commerce-specific fields,
and custom retail attributes where applicable to the approved design.
Source Assessment, Mapping and Data Cleansing
Assess Oracle source extracts and profile data to identify duplicates, missing mandatory fields, invalid values, inconsistent units, obsolete records, and broken relationships.
Own source-to-target mapping, transformation rules, value mapping, data dictionaries, templates, and field-level validation specifications in coordination with functional consultants and business owners.
Drive business-led data cleansing and enrichment; track ownership, due dates, approval status, and readiness by object. Do not rely on technical workarounds for unresolved business data issues.
Validate dependencies such as article-to-merchandise-category, article-to-site, supplier-to-PIR, and article- to-pricing relationships before each load.
Migration Build, Load Execution and Reconciliation
Plan and execute migration cycles using SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit and available standard migration objects/templates; coordinate approved custom programs, APIs, staging, or other utilities where standard capabilities do not meet requirements.
Manage extraction, transformation, staging, simulation, load execution, error analysis, reprocessing, delta loads, and repeat loads.
Determine the appropriate migration approach for each object and document technical dependencies, risks, and approvals for objects requiring an alternative approach.
Execute mock loads and reconcile source and target record counts, key fields, values, and relationships; retain evidence and obtain functional/business sign-off.
Maintain a central defect log with root cause, severity, owner, target date, corrective action, retest result, and closure evidence.
Testing, Cutover and Go-Live Readiness
Ensure required master data is available and validated ahead of SIT, UAT, business process testing, and cutover milestones.
Prepare the detailed migration cutover runbook covering load sequence, dependencies, owners, timing, data freeze, final extracts, delta handling, validation, contingency steps, and sign-offs.
Track critical data readiness and unresolved defects, assess business impact, and escalate decisions that may affect store/DC operations or go-live.
Support final migration execution, reconciliation, business acceptance, and post-go-live data issue resolution during hypercare.
Governance and Stakeholder Collaboration
Act as the primary point of contact for master data migration across business data owners, Oracle/source-
system teams, SAP Retail, MM, SD/Pricing, FI, EWM, integration, ABAP, and project management teams.
Conduct data readiness and validation workshops; clarify data ownership, acceptance criteria, cleansing responsibilities, and approval timelines.
Maintain controlled documentation for mapping, templates, load logs, reconciliation, decisions, risks,
and sign-offs in the project repository.
Ensure migration activities comply with project governance, change control, data confidentiality, and audit requirements.
Functional/Technical Competencies
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Management, Engineering, or a related field.
Experience

Hands-on experience with SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit, migration templates, mapping/value mapping, simulation, load execution, error handling, and reconciliation.
Experience with source-to-target mapping, data profiling, data cleansing, transformation rules, SQL and advanced Excel for analysis and reconciliation.
Ability to coordinate with ABAP/BTP/integration teams for approved custom migration solutions where standard migration objects are insufficient.
Familiarity with SAP Business Partner approach and relevant S/4HANA Retail data models; DMC, LSMW, or other ETL tools are advantageous.
Leadership and Soft Skills
Demonstrated ability to lead, prioritize, review, and coach a migration team; strong ownership of timelines, quality, and deliverables.
Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, including the ability to drive business data cleansing and secure timely sign-offs.
