Applications are invited for the post of Project Scientist I-Biomedical Engineer (Hardware & Software) for the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) funded IIRP project in the Centre for Biomaterials, Cellular and Molecular Theranostics (CBCMT), at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT),Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India.
Title of the Project
:
Droplet-Microfluidic-based High-throughput 3-Dimensional Organoid Generator for Advanced Drug Screening Applications
Qualification
:
Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Biomedical, Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Electronics, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Instrumentation Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline, from a recognised institution.
A minimum of two (2) years of professional or research experience in the design and development of biomedical devices, scientific or precision instrumentation.
Demonstrable hands-on experience across hardware AND software, evidenced by devices, prototypes, publications, patents or code repositories the candidate can defend in interview.
Age limit as per ICMR and funding-agency norms, with relaxation for reserved categories as per Government of India rules.
Describe if any
Hardware Engineering
- 3D CAD modelling and preparation of 2D engineering drawings (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo, Inventor or equivalent).
- Analog and digital circuit design, schematic capture and PCB layout (KiCad, Altium, Eagle or equivalent).
- Practical bench skills — soldering and rework, oscilloscope, multimeter and bench power supply — and systematic debugging: isolating a fault to a subsystem and proving the diagnosis.
- Sensor selection, signal conditioning and integration; prototyping by 3D printing and machining; mechanical assembly and alignment.
Software and Programming
- Strong programming ability in Python, including NumPy and the scientific computing stack.
- Practical image processing and computer vision with OpenCV — thresholding and adaptive segmentation, morphological operations, contour detection and measurement,
and object tracking.
- Embedded programming in C/C++ or MicroPython on a microcontroller platform (Arduino, STM32, ESP32 or similar).
- Competence on Linux, including the command line and single-board computers such as the Raspberry Pi; Git, and the discipline to write readable, documented, maintainable code.
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
- Working knowledge of deep learning for computer vision, with the practical ability to train, fine-tune and evaluate a model end to end — not only to call a pre-trained one.
- Hands-on experience with at least one mainstream framework, preferably PyTorch (TensorFlow or Keras also accepted), together with scikit-learn for classical machine learning.
- Familiarity with convolutional and encoder–decoder architectures for segmentation and classification, and with transfer learning from pre-trained weights.
- Sound experimental discipline: correct train / validation / test splits, cross-validation, awareness of leakage and over-fitting, and the ability to choose and interpret the right metric.
- Image-data handling — annotation workflows, augmentation, normalisation, and working productively with the small or imbalanced datasets typical of biomedical imaging.
- Sound judgement on when NOT to use machine learning: recognising where a well-tuned classical algorithm is more robust, more explainable and cheaper to run than a learned model.
Communication and Working Style
- Strong written and spoken English, with clear technical writing and presentation.
- Ability to work independently and drive tasks to completion in a research setting with evolving requirements; effectiveness within a multidisciplinary team of engineers, biologists and clinicians, and credibility in front of external industry partners.
- Rigour about documentation, measurement and reproducibility; willingness to learn the biology alongside the engineering and keep pace with a fast-moving AI and instrumentation field.
Job Responsibilities
- Work closely with industry partners.
- Engineering design, Device, Mechanical and Fluidic Engineering
- Electronics, Embedded Systems and Instrumentation
- Imaging, Software and Applied AI
- Analyse and interpret experimental data
- Publish research findings in high-impact journals
- Collaborate with project team members and contribute to project reports
- Assist in mentoring junior researchers and students
