Role Overview
We are looking for a skilled and ownership-driven DevOps Engineer to join our Engineering team. You will design, build, and operate the cloud infrastructure, container orchestration, and delivery pipelines that power Styli's commerce platform on GCP. This is a hands-on role with high autonomy — you will own critical systems, drive automation, and work closely with product engineering teams to ensure we ship fast and stay reliable.
What You'll Do
Cloud Infrastructure (AWS & GCP)
- Design, provision, and maintain production-grade infrastructure across AWS (primary) and GCP, including compute, networking, storage, and managed services.
- Architect and manage multi-region, highly available environments with a focus on fault tolerance and cost efficiency.
- Own IAM strategy, VPC design, security groups, service mesh configurations, and cross-cloud networking (VPN / Interconnect / Transit Gateway).
- Drive cloud cost optimization through right-sizing, reserved instance planning, Spot/preemptible workload strategies, and tagging governance.
- Manage cloud-native services: EKS, GKE, RDS/Aurora, ElastiCache, Cloud Spanner, Pub/Sub, SQS/SNS, CloudFront, and more.
Kubernetes & Container Orchestration
- Build and operate production Kubernetes clusters on GKE with a strong focus on reliability, security, and operational efficiency.
- Design workload scheduling strategies including autoscaling (HPA, VPA, KEDA), node pool management, and pod disruption budgets.
- Implement and maintain Helm charts, Kustomize overlays, and GitOps-based delivery workflows (ArgoCD / Flux).
- Enforce cluster security: RBAC, network policies, OPA/Kyverno admission control, image signing, and secrets management (Vault / AWS Secrets Manager / GCP Secret Manager).
- Manage service mesh (Istio / Linkerd) for traffic management, observability, and mTLS between services.
Scaling & Performance Engineering
- Design and implement horizontal and vertical scaling strategies to handle traffic spikes — including sale events, campaign launches, and seasonal peaks.
- Build and tune auto-scaling pipelines across cloud instances, Kubernetes workloads, and managed services to ensure zero downtime under surge conditions.
- Profile infrastructure bottlenecks in collaboration with backend engineering; drive resolutions across compute, network, and storage layers.
- Establish and monitor capacity plans with defined headroom SLOs for all critical services.
CI/CD & Developer Experience
- Design and maintain robust, fast CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins — supporting microservices, containerised builds, and multi-environment promotion.
- Build internal developer platforms and golden paths that enable engineering teams to deploy with confidence and speed.
- Implement progressive delivery patterns: blue-green deployments, canary releases, and feature flags with automated rollback.
- Own build optimisation — caching strategies, parallelisation, and pipeline observability to reduce feedback cycle times.
Infrastructure as Code & Automation
- Author and maintain all infrastructure using Terraform (primary) and Pulumi/CDK where appropriate — with state management, module registries, and policy-as-code.
- Automate operational tasks and toil elimination using Python, Bash, or Go.
- Maintain configuration management and environment consistency across dev, staging, and production environments.
What We're Looking For
Required
- 5–8 years of hands-on DevOps / Platform / Infrastructure Engineering experience.
- Strong working knowledge of GCP — GKE, Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, Pub/Sub, and GCP networking fundamentals.
- Expert-level Kubernetes operations: cluster lifecycle management, workload scheduling, autoscaling, RBAC, and networking (CNI, Ingress, Service Mesh).
- Proficiency in Terraform for multi-cloud IaC — module design, state management, and CI/CD-integrated plan/apply workflows.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD tooling: GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or equivalent.
- Solid scripting skills in Python and/or Bash
- Solid understanding of Linux systems administration, networking (DNS, TLS, TCP/IP, HTTP/2), and distributed systems fundamentals.
- Experience designing for high availability and scale — load balancing, stateless service design, caching layers, and database connection management.
Good to Have
- Experience running infrastructure for high-traffic e-commerce events (flash sales, product launches, or festive season scaling).
- Familiarity with FinOps practices and cloud cost attribution models.
- Experience with service mesh (Istio or Linkerd) in production.
- Knowledge of container security hardening: image scanning, runtime protection (Falco), admission controllers.
- Experience with data platform infrastructure: Kafka, Spark, Airflow, or dbt on cloud.
- Relevant certifications: AWS Solutions Architect / DevOps Professional, Google Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer, CKA/CKAD.
The Scale You'll Work At
- Millions of active users across multiple countries in the Middle East such as Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman.
- High-concurrency commerce events — flash sales and campaign launches driving 10x–20x baseline traffic.
- Microservices deployed across multi-region Kubernetes clusters.
- Cloud architecture hosted in GCP (primary) and with a focus on regional proximity to end users.
