ROLE PURPOSE
RightWalk has impacted 1.5M+ lives and unlocked $2.2Bn+ in public funds, with recognition from Ashoka, LSE, the UK Parliament and NITI Aayog. Most of that story is still untold in the places it matters — policy rooms, donor tables, and the national press.
The Communication Manager – Institutional & Strategic Communication is the writing and evidence engine of that vertical. This role produces the long-form, high-stakes assets that carry RightWalk's name: impact stories, op-eds, founder thought leadership, the annual report, donor and fundraising narrative, and the newsletter. It also owns the discipline behind the claims we make — maintaining the claims tracker and the content repository so that every number RightWalk states in public is sourced, current and defensible.
This is a craft role with institutional consequence. The person is measured on the quality and credibility of what RightWalk publishes, not on volume.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Impact Storytelling & Story Writing
- Source, report and write RightWalk's impact stories — from the field, the states, and the programme teams — so that individual outcomes read as evidence of systems change, not as isolated anecdotes.
- Travel to project geographies and states to gather first-hand material: interviews, case detail, photographs, and field notes.
- Build a standing bank of story material that the Digital & Campaign vertical, the fundraising team and the founders can all draw on.
- Convert policy and data outputs into narratives that a non-specialist reader can follow without losing technical accuracy.
1. Founder Thought Leadership & Long-Form Writing
- Draft op-eds, founder notes, speeches, forewords, keynote scripts and thought pieces in the founders' voice, from brief to publication-ready copy.
- Research and build the argument behind each piece — evidence, counterpoints, policy context, and the specific intervention being argued for.
- Manage the placement pipeline for long-form pieces in coordination with the Head – Strategic Communication, and track what was pitched, placed and published.
- Prepare briefing notes and talking points for founders and senior leadership ahead of forums, conferences and media interactions.
1. Annual Report & Institutional Publications
- Own the annual report end to end: structure, narrative arc, content collection from programme and finance teams, drafting, editing, fact-checking and production coordination with design.
- Produce case studies, policy briefs written for public consumption, institutional decks, concept notes and the organisational profile.
- Maintain a single, current library of institutional boilerplate — who we are, what we have achieved, how we work — and keep every version in circulation aligned to it.
1. Donor & Fundraising Narrative
- Work with the Fundraising team to shape donor-facing narrative: proposal storylines, stewardship reports, impact updates and pitch content.
- Ensure donor communication carries RightWalk's institutional voice rather than reading as bespoke, one-off writing.
- Translate programme results into the outcome language that institutional and philanthropic funders expect, without inflating what the evidence supports.
1. Newsletter & Stakeholder Communication
- Plan, write and publish RightWalk's newsletter on a predictable cycle — deciding what earns a place in it and what does not.
- Segment and shape content for distinct audiences: government partners, donors, sector peers and internal teams.
- Supply the Digital & Campaign vertical with institutional content for adaptation into social and campaign formats, and review those adaptations for accuracy.
1. Claims Tracker, Repository & Knowledge Systems
- Own and maintain the claims tracker: every public figure RightWalk uses — lives impacted, funds unlocked, states covered — with its source, date and owner.
- Act as the fact-check gate for external communication across the function; flag and correct claims that outrun the evidence.
- Build and maintain the content repository — stories, photographs, reports, testimonials, decks — so that assets are findable and reusable rather than rebuilt each time.
- Establish the documentation and knowledge-management practice that the function will scale into a dedicated Knowledge Management role as the team grows.
1. Editorial Standards & Collaboration
- Work under the Head - Strategic Communication on editorial direction, priorities and sign-off.
- Coordinate with the Policy, Programme and Data teams to ensure external writing reflects RightWalk's policy positions accurately.
- Hold the editorial standard on everything published under this vertical: structure, evidence, tone and consistency.
- Protect RightWalk's credibility with government and donor partners by avoiding exaggerated or unverifiable claims.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
- Experience: 5–8 years in institutional communication, journalism, research writing, policy communication or development-sector content. Experience in a non-profit, think-tank, foundation or public-policy workplace is preferred.
- Writing: Exceptional writing ability. Can move between registers — field story, op-ed, donor report, policy brief — and write convincingly in someone else's voice.
- Editorial judgement: Can tell the difference between a story that matters and one that merely happened, and can defend that judgement.
- Evidence discipline: Comfortable with data, programme reports and policy documents; instinctively checks a number before it is published.
- Reporting ability: Willing and able to travel to field sites and states, conduct interviews, and build stories from primary material.
- Systems mindset: Organised enough to run a claims tracker and a content repository without being asked twice.
- Collaboration: Comfortable taking editorial direction while owning delivery end to end, and working closely with founders, programme leads and fundraising colleagues.
- Languages: Fluent English writing is essential; working Hindi is a strong advantage for field reporting.
