Overview The Requirements Engineer will lead requirements engineering for complex rail and nuclear projects, ensuring stakeholder, system, functional, interface, safety, cybersecurity, operational and assurance requirements are explicit, verifiable, controlled and fully traceable. The role requires strong systems engineering capability, mandatory MBSE experience, and practical understanding of system architecture, interfaces, operational scenarios, integration constraints and verification needs. This is not a requirements database administration role; the candidate must be able to technically challenge, interpret and validate requirements with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Your role
- Lead requirements elicitation, analysis, validation, baseline control, change impact assessment and traceability from stakeholder needs through design, implementation, integration, testing, commissioning, handover and acceptance.
- Develop and maintain stakeholder, system, subsystem, functional, non-functional, safety, security, operational, maintainability, interface and assurance requirements.
- Apply MBSE and systems engineering methods to connect requirements with architecture models, operational scenarios, interface definitions, verification evidence and system integration risks.
- Support interface management and ICD development for internal and external rail/nuclear systems, including functional, physical, operational, data, safety and cybersecurity interfaces.
- Perform requirements quality reviews to identify ambiguity, gaps, conflicts, duplication, missing verification methods, unclear ownership, assumptions, constraints and cross-discipline dependencies.
- Prepare requirements management plans, traceability matrices, compliance matrices, interface registers, verification cross-reference matrices, assurance review packs and requirements status reports.
- Support V&V; planning, test specifications, design reviews, hazard reviews, assurance gates, readiness reviews,
commissioning reviews and requirements close-out.
- Work closely with systems engineering, signalling, telecoms, I&C;/control systems, electrical, mechanical, civil, RAMS, cybersecurity, quality, commissioning, operations and assurance teams.
Rail and Nuclear Sector Knowledge
Rail:
- Understanding of rail systems engineering, integration, staged commissioning, brownfield interfaces, operational readiness, depots, stations, control centres, signalling, train control, telecoms, passenger/emergency communication, CCTV, access control and integrated control systems.
Nuclear:
- Understanding of nuclear safety culture, graded approach, defence-in-depth, quality assurance, configuration control, evidence-based assurance, safety-classified systems, I&C;, physical security and emergency preparedness interfaces.
- Working knowledge of relevant standards and assurance practices such as ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288, INCOSE guidance, EN 50126/50128/50129, IEC 62290, EN 50159, CSM-RA, IAEA guidance, ISO 19443, IEC 61513, IEC 60880, IEC 62138, IEC 62645 or equivalent, as applicable.
About you
- Mandatory Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) experience, including SysML-based modelling, architecture modelling, interface modelling, requirements allocation and model-to-requirements traceability using Cameo, Enterprise Architect, Capella, Rhapsody or equivalent.
- Strong systems technical understanding across rail and/or nuclear systems, including system architecture, functions, subsystems, operating modes, interfaces, data flows, integration constraints, safety requirements, cybersecurity requirements and V&V; needs.
- Proven ability to derive, decompose, allocate, validate and control requirements from standards, operating concepts, hazards, interface definitions, ICDs, design outputs, verification methods and assurance gates.
- Experience using requirements tools such as IBM DOORS, DOORS Next, Polarion, Jama, ReqIF or equivalent, with the ability to use the tool as part of a wider systems engineering and assurance process, not only for database maintenance.
- Experience working in safety-critical or regulated environments, preferably rail, metro, nuclear facilities, control systems, signalling, telecoms, I&C;, safety systems or infrastructure projects.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Control Systems, Nuclear Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline.
- Typically 7+ years’ experience in requirements engineering, systems engineering, assurance or technical delivery within regulated rail, nuclear or safety-critical infrastructure projects.
- Strong technical writing, stakeholder engagement, workshop facilitation, requirements review, compliance assessment and multidisciplinary coordination skills.
- Preferred: INCOSE ASEP/CSEP/ESEP or equivalent systems engineering certification; experience with RAMS, safety case support, cybersecurity engineering, human factors, operability and maintainability.
